Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team continued its race to the wire for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a, 66-49, win over Eureka College on February 21 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks are 12-5 in the SLIAC and tied with MacMurray College, one half-game behind Spalding University, who finished at 13-5.
The Gorloks play at Greenville College on February 24. If Webster would win that contest and finish at 13-5 also, the Gorloks would hold the conference tie-breakers over Spalding and MacMurray, giving them the #1 seed and the right to host the SLIAC Tournament. The winner of the SLIAC Tournament advances to the NCAA III Championships.
Webster jumped out to a 26-13 lead to start the contest, with Eureka riding a 9-0 run to close the gap to 26-22 with 3:15 left in the first half. The Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run of their own, and ended the half with a 34-22.
Back to back three-pointers by Ahmad Smith (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) and Joseph Henry (SO, Leavenworth, KS/Lansing HS) made it 52-28 Webster with 13:00 and the rout was on.
Smith, one of three seniors honored in a pre-game ceremony, had a team-high 18 points on 7-12 shooting. Smith also had a team-high four steals and had six rebounds as well.
Henry finished with 12 points, going 5-6 from the field including 2-2 from the three-point line. C. J. Moore (SO, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals on the afternoon.
Aaron Griffin (Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS), another of the honored seniors, had six points and six rebounds. The final senior honored was DeVon Haynes (St. Louis, MO/Christian Academy of St. Louis), who played in his first varsity contest after spending four years as part of the program.
Again, the Gorloks travel to Greenville College (IL) on February 24 for their final regular season contest, in hopes of grabbing a share of the SLIAC title and the #1 tournament seed.
