Gorloks Dodge Snow, But Fall to Maryville

The Webster University women's tennis team played one of the few college sporting events in St. Louis on March 1, with a six-inch snowfall on the ground.  The Gorloks escaped indoors but still lost to NCAA II Maryville University, 9-0, at Vetta's Concord indoor facility.

Webster was overmatched by the Saints, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, a program that awards athletic scholarships.   Marissa Lewis (SR, Owasso, OK/Owasso HS) and Monica Behrle (Atlanta, GA/East Paulding HS) both suffered their first singles losses of the year.

Lewis, playing at #1 singles, took her counterpart to a tie-breaker set and was finally outlasted, 14-12.  Lewis is now 5-1 on the year.  Behrle, playing at #2 singles, also took her opponent to a tie-breaker set.  Behrle fell, 10-7, in the third set and is now 6-1 on the year.

The Gorloks are 2-2 overall on the year.  The team will head to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for spring break on March 7-14.  Webster will play five different schools on the trip before opening play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on March 21 with a match at Blackburn College (IL).
