The Webster University women's basketball team opens its season as it hosts the Cavallo Tip-Off, with a game vs. Rust College on November 18 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks are buoyed by a an experienced roster of returnees and a recruiting class of seven players that includes three transfers and four freshmen.
Head Coach Jordan Olufson hopes the blend of returners and recruits will be a recipe for a great year on the court. Olufson has a good mix of upperclassman and younger players to go with seven newcomers. Kelsey Miller (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central/Maryville University), last season's leading scorer, returns. Miller averaged 8.8 pts per game while shooting 39% from the three3-pt arc, hitting 37 three-pointers. Taylor Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) who averaged 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and shot 43% from the floor, also returns. Taylor and four other players who saw over 300+ minutes last season are back.
Seniors Paige Buechele (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) and Chelsea Holman (Decherd, TN/Franklin County) give the team additional returning experience . Sophomore Megan Brandt (Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) is also back after averaging 6.1 points per game and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. The Gorloks' incoming class includes two-time All-State performer Jaysea Morgan (FR, Fisk, MO/Twin Rivers) as well as Jade Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Republic) and transfer Ebony Bailey (JR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy/John Wood CC).
Webster University finished fifth in the SLIAC coaches pre-season poll with 39 total points. The Gorloks were 12-13 overall last season, going 9-9 in the SLIAC. The Gorloks tip off against Rust at 8:00 p.m. on the 18th.
