The Webster University men's tennis team played its first two matches of the year, heading to the Chicago area to face a pair of NCAA III foes on February 28. The Gorloks won, 5-4, over Dominican University after dropping their first match, 8-1, to host North Central College in Naperville, IL. Webster's freshmen duo of Ian Powers and Charles McGee impressed in their collegiate debuts in the two matches.
Webster pulled out to a 4-2 lead over Dominican, starting with the singles matches. Juan Granizo (JR, Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Alberto Einstein), freshman Powers (Farmington, MO/Farmington HS), Trent Purnell (SR, Marion, IL/Marion HS), and freshman McGee (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) all won in straight sets.
Granizo and Powers won, 8-4, at #1 doubles to clinch the Dominican match.
Against North Central, Webster fell behind 3-0 after the doubles matches. Granizo, though, won by forfeit at #1 singles after his opponent was injured in the third set. Powers, Purnell, and McGee all won their first sets at singles, but wound up falling in tie-breaker sets. Purnell's and McGee's matches went to 'super' tie-breakers.
The Gorloks have a pair of exhibition matches this week vs. Kaskaskia College on March 1 at home, and at Lewis and Clark CC on March 3 in Godfrey, IL. The Gorloks open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on March 15 at Fontbonne University.
