The Webster University men's tennis team suffered its first loss in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 6-3 loss at Westminster College, on March 22 in Fulton, MO. The Gorloks dug themselves in a deep hole, losing all three doubles matches, and tried to rebound in singles but couldn't get over the hump.
Webster won three of the six singles matches with Juan Granizo (JR, Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Alberto Einstein) remaining undefeated in singles at 6-0 on the season, with a straight set win at #1. Trent Purnell (SR, Marion, IL/Marion HS) won at #4 in the tie-breaker and Charles McGee (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) won in straight sets at #6. The win was McGee's fifth straight, with his only loss in singles on the season coming in his first match in the tie-breaker.
Two of the doubles losses were battles, as Granizo and Ian Powers (FR, Farmington, MO/Farmington HS) were nipped, 9-8, at #1, and McGee and Zach Selby (SR, Redding, CA/Enterprise HS) fell, 8-6, at #3.
Webster is 1-1 in the SLIAC and 4-2 overall on the season. The Gorloks host Illinois College and Kaskaskia College (IL) on March 26 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. The match vs. Kaskaskia, a community college, will be an exhibition match.
