Men's Hoops Closes Regular Season Saturday at Greenville

WEBSTER GROVES - The Webster University men's basketball team will close the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday as they travel to Greenville, Ill., for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up against Greenville University. Saturday's game is scheduled to tip at 5 p.m. at H.L. Long Gymnasium on the Greenville University campus.
 
The Gorloks, who are 13-11 overall and 10-7 in the SLIAC, enter Saturday's final day of the regular season needing either a victory against Greenville or a Blackburn loss at Westminster to advance to next week's SLIAC Tournament. Coming into play Saturday, Webster is tied for third in the league standings with Westminster as both teams are 10-7, while Blackburn is one game behind both Webster and Westminster at 9-8. Greenville enters the game needing one win or a Eureka (17-7 overall, 12-5 SLIAC) loss on Saturday to Fontbonne to secure the regular season title and host the SLIAC Tournament as the Panthers are sporting a 16-8 overall record and are 13-4 in the league. 
So with that in mind and figuring out all the tiebreaking scenarios, here are the scenarios that determine Webster's postseason fate. (Complete SLIAC tiebreaking procedures found here)

Win at Greenville: Qualify for SLIAC Tournament
Lose at Greenville and Blackburn loss at Westminster: Qualify for SLIAC Tournament
Lose at Greenville and Blackburn win at Westminister: Blackburn and Westminster qualify, Webster eliminated due to a three-way tiebreaker scenario.
 
Saturday's game will be the second meeting this season between the two schools as the Gorloks suffered a 129-105 loss at home to the Panthers on Jan. 17. In addition, it will also mark the 47th all-time meeting between the two schools as Webster holds a commanding 33-13 edge in the series. including current Gorlok head coach Chris Bunch being 27-5 against Greenville.  

The Gorloks come into the contest averaging 75.8 points per game and are shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from the 3-point line. Webster continues to be one of the better defensive teams in the SLIAC as they are allowing 77 points per game, which is third best in the league and they the league in blocked shots (5.1 per game), is fourth in steals (7.6 per game) and second in rebound margin (+3.4) and is third in assists at 19.0 per game. 

Leading the way for the Gorloks is freshman forward Nigel Wilcox (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial), who is averaging 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and a league-best 2.5 blocks per game and has had a team-leading five double-doubles. His 58 blocks this season are second-most in single season history. Along with Wilcox, two other Gorloks are averaging in double figures as sophomore guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) is averaging 13.3 points and 3.8 assists per game, while freshman guard Christian Crespo (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) is averaging 13.0 points and 4.8 assists per game and is shooting 43 percent from the 3-point line.

Greenville comes into the game as one of the top offensive teams in all collegiate men's basketball as the Panthers are averaging 126.4 points per game, which is tops among all NCAA basketball playing schools. Along with averaging 126.4 points per game, Greenville is shooting 43 percent from the field, 35 percent from the 3-point line and are averaging an NCAA Division III best 19.0 made 3-pointers game. Additionally, Greenville has a +11.8 turnover margin and are averaging 17.7 steals per game, which is also tops in Division III.

Leading the way for Greenville is junior guard Johari Dix, who is averaging 19.7 points and 5.1 assists per game. Dix is one of seven Panther players averaging in double figures on the year. In addition to Dix, junior forward Sonti Gray is averaging 12.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Barry Nixon leads the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per game and is also averaging 11.2 points per game.
