Six Gorloks Named All-SLIAC Women's Tennis Team Selections

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Webster University was well represented on the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2019 All-League Teams for women's tennis on Wednesday afternoon.

On the All-SLIAC Teams for women's tennis, Webster had a total of six players named to one of the leagues two teams, including three First-Team selections that were voted on by the head coaches and the head coaches weren't allowed to vote for their own players.

Along with naming the All-SLIAC Teams, which are determined by flights, the league also announced the winners of its three individual awards – Player, Newcomer and Coach of the Year. The league's Player of the Year was Principia's Paige Cooley, while the Newcomer of the Year is Principia's Greer Sprague and Greenville's Brett Brannon was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a regular season title in women's tennis and the No. 1 seed in the SLIAC Tournament. For Cooley, the Player of the Year honor is her third in the last four years as she won back-to-back honors in 2016 and 2017, before taking last year off to study abroad.

Webster's All-SLIAC selections included senior Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) earning repeat First-Team honors at No. 2 singles, while the sophomore Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) earns Second-Team All-SLIAC honors at No. 3 singles and freshman Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) earned Second-Team All-SLIAC honors at No. 5 singles. In addition to three singles players that earned All-SLIAC honors, all three of Webster's doubles teams also earned All-SLIAC recognition as the No. 2 team of Federhofer and freshman Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) earned First-Team honors, while Watts and senior Sara Rice (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) and Armstrong and freshman Addie Struckman (OFallon, Mo./Francis Howell) earned Second-Team All-SLIAC honors at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles respectively.

Watts, who was a four-time All-SLIAC selection in her Webster career, including earning first team honors at No. 2 singles the past three seasons, earned her first team honor at No. 2 singles this season after posting a perfect 4-0 record in SLIAC play in singles and went 3-1 in doubles in play with Rice at the No. 1 spot in the line-up. On the season, Watts posted a 7-0 record in singles and was a combined 6-4 in doubles on the season in doubles. Watts closed out her career with a 30-30 record in singles, including posting a 19-12 mark at No. 2 singles and she went 43-29 in doubles as a Gorlok, including a 28-19 mark at No. 1 doubles, with 19 of those wins coming in the last two years. The 43 doubles wins are tied for seventh on the school's all-time chart.

Federhofer, who was a First-Team selection at No. 4 singles and earned Second-Team honors at No. 2 doubles a year ago, earns her Second-Team All-SLIAC spot at No. 3 singles after posting a 4-1 record in SLIAC play in singles and going 3-0 in doubles with Ferguson at the No. 2 spot. On the season, Federhofer posted an 8-6 record in singles, including a 6-3 mark at the No. 3 spot and was a combined 9-6 in doubles, including a 9-2 mark at the No. 2 spot.  

Ferguson earns her spot on the first team at No. 2 doubles as she posted a 5-0 record in SLIAC doubles play, including partnering with Federhofer to go 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and recorded an overall record of 9-10 on the season in doubles action. Additionally, Ferguson, who mostly played No. 4 singles on the season, went 7-11 in singles on the year.

Armstrong earns her Second-Team accolade at No. 5 singles after posting a 4-1 record during SLIAC play and teamed with Struckman to go 2-1 at No. 3 doubles in league action. On the season, Armstrong finished her freshman campaign with a 9-9 record in singles, including an 8-1 mark at No. 5 singles and ended the season winning her final six singles matches. In doubles action this season, Armstrong went 8-10, including a 5-2 mark at No. 3 and a 3-2 mark at No. 2 doubles. She also played four matches at No. 1 doubles with Federhofer.

Rice, who was a First-Team honoree at No. 3 singles last season and also earned Second-Team honors at No. 2 doubles a season ago, was tabbed a Second-Team All-SLIAC selection at No. 1 doubles as she and Watts went 3-1 in league action in doubles and posted an overall record of 6-4 in doubles on the season. Along with playing doubles, Rice was also Webster's No. 1 singles player this season and she posted a 5-9 mark, including a 3-2 mark in league play. In her four years at Webster, Rice won 39 singles matches and went 39-31 in singles play and also won 36 doubles matches, including 18 wins in doubles the past two seasons. Her 36 doubles wins are 10th on the school's all-time list.

Struckman earned Second-Team All-SLIAC honors at No. 3 doubles with her partner, Armstrong. On the season, Struckman and Armstrong went 2-1 in doubles action in SLIAC play and posted an overall record of 5-2 in doubles on the season. On the season, Struckman went 5-10 in doubles and posted a 1-9 mark in singles as she played four matches each at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.

The league also named Fontbonne as the Team Sportsmanship Award winner and named six players to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team, including Struckman, who represented Webster on the team. The other members of the SLIAC Women's Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team were Blackburn's Erica Bechtold, Fontbonne's Emily Bay, Greenville's Emma Wieland, Principia's Cooley and Westminster's Sydney Attebery.
