Men’s Tennis Drop Both Matches In Indiana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Webster men's tennis team traveled to the state of Indiana for a pair of matches on Saturday. The Gorloks faced very tough competition and dropped both matches to Trine University and the host Franklin College.

Match #1: Webster 0, Trine 7

The Gorloks started the day against Trine University with doubles competition. The No. 2 doubles team of Matthew Birchmeier and Carson Fisher captured four sets but dropped the match by the score of 4-6. 

Webster's No. 1 doubles team of Ethan Foucheuax and first-year Eli Bartek earned three set victories but unfortunately fell to their opponents by the score of 3-6. 

In singles play, Birchmeier played in the No. 3 position and battled his opponent in Andrew Spirrison fiercely. In the opening set, both student-athletes went point-for-point and exchanged set victories that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Trine's Spirrison got off to an early lead as Birchmeier battled back but fell short by the score of 3-7.

WU's Foucheuax played in the No. 1 singles spot and gained three set victories in his match but dropped the match in straight sets.  

Match #2: Webster 2, Franklin 5

In the second match of the day, the Gorloks faced a talented Franklin College squad and got off to a slow start by dropping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo team of Foucheuax and Bartek battled their opponents closely but fell by the score of 4-6. In the No. 2 doubles match, WU's Tyler Gonzales and Birchmeier earned three set victories but eventually dropped the set. 

The Gorloks earned both victories of the match in singles play in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. WU's Foucheuax played in the No. 1 spot and blanked his opponent in Nathan Jorboe in the second set that forced a third set. In the third set, Foucheuax took the lead and cruised to a 10-5 victory. 

WU's Birchmeier displayed his skills in the No. 3 singles match with an incredible victory that went the distance. In the opening set, Birchmeier went back-and-forth with Dustin Garrison as both student-athletes achieved a tie at six apiece. In the extra set, Garrison won the set for the early 1-0 lead. 

Birchmeier took care of business in the second set and took the set by the score of 6-2 that forced a third set. In the winner-take-all set, both student-athletes put on a show with fantastic shots as Birchmeier closed out the match with back-to-back points that took the victory. 

The Gorloks will travel across town to Washington University in St. Louis on September 20 to participate in the 2024 ITA Regional Championships.
