Merritt’s Record-Setting Heptathlon Meet At UIndy Earns SLIAC Field Athlete of the Week Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has released the names of the winter student-athletes who were selected for Player of the Week honors for the week of December 1-7. WU's Austin Merritt broke the SLIAC and Webster University All-Time Heptathlon records with 4,521 points that earned SLIAC Field Athlete of the Week honors. 

Last Friday and Saturday, the Webster University men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2025-26 indoor season competing in the two-day Scott Fangman Invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis. 

Merritt, a native of nearby Freeburg, Illinois could not have asked for a better start to his senior season that included three new personal records in the 60m dash, 60m hurdles, and in the shot put.

In the 60m dash, Merritt set a new personal record with a time of 7.06 seconds which earned first place and 861 points. 

In the long jump, he earned fourth place with a mark of 5.94m for 574 points.

In the shot put, he set a new personal record with a mark of 12.53m that earned second overall and 639 points.

In the high jump, he earned a tie for first overall with a clearance of 1.75m for 585 points. 

In the 60m hurdles, he set a new personal record with a time of 9.25 seconds that earned second place and 692 points.

In the pole vault event, he earned a third place finish with a mark of 3.90m for 590 points. 

In the 1000m run, he secured third place with a time of 3:08.88 for 580 points.

With the addition of all seven scores, Merritt recorded 4,521 points which broke his own school record by 300 points. In addition, he finished second out of five heptathlon competitors and 115 points behind the leader.
