Merritt Shatters All-Time SLIAC and Webster Heptathlon Records With 4,521 Points; Washington Breaks 60m Hurdles School Record At UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Webster University men's track and field team opened the 2025-26 season at the two-day Scott Fangman Invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday. WU's Austin Merritt had a great opening weekend in the heptathlon as he set the new school record and SLIAC record with 4,521 points. In the 60m hurdles event, first-year Devin Washington set the new all-time school record and new personal record with a time of 8.78 seconds. 

In the heptathlon, Merritt set three new personal records which included the events of 60m dash, 60m hurdles, and in the shot put. In the 60m dash, Merritt set a new personal record with a time of 7.06 seconds which earned first place in the event and 861 points. In the high jump, he earned a tie for first overall with a mark of 1.75m for 585 points. In the 60m hurdles, he achieved a new personal record with a time of 9.25 seconds which earned a second place finish and 692 points.

In the shot put event, Merritt set a new personal record with a mark of 12.53m which earned second overall and 639 points. In the pole vault event, he earned a third overall finish with a clearing mark of 3.90m for 590 points. In the 1000m run, he secured a third place finish with a time of 3:08.88 for 580 points. In the long jump, Merritt secured fourth overall with a mark of 5.94m on his final attempt for 574 points. With the addition of all seven scores, Merritt broke his own school record by 300 points. 

In the 60m dash, seven Gorloks competed in the event led by Dylan Patterson as he secured a new personal record with a time of 6.90 seconds which earned second overall. With that time, he now ranks fourth all-time in the conference record books for the event. In addition to Patterson, first-year Calvin Nash was the next Gorlok that crossed the finish line as he recorded a time of 7.21 seconds. Sophomore sprinter and jumper Robin Wong crossed the finish line with a time of 7.40 seconds. First-years Kaiden Richardson and Khaleb Moore recorded times of 7.44 seconds and 7.46 seconds respectively while Mason Oldani recorded a time of 7.57 seconds. First-year Juan Gomez rounded out the field for Webster with a time of 8.96 seconds.

In the 200m dash, three Gorloks competed in the event which was led by Nash with a time of 23.35 seconds. Sophomore sprinter Lucas LaRue tied his personal record with a time of 24.54 seconds while Washington recorded a time of 24.94 seconds.

In the 400m event, K. Richardson earned a seventh overall finish with a time of 52.79 seconds while Nic Richardson recorded a time of 53.33 seconds that earned 14th overall. First-year Donnell Nylon rounded out the field for Webster with a time of 55.43 seconds.

In the one mile run, seven Gorloks competed in the event which was led by Ethan Nieroda with a time of 4:43.87 that earned 12th overall. The next Gorlok that crossed the finish line was Brayden Halter with a time of 4:57.55 that earned 15th overall. In addition, Johnny Imboden recorded a time of 5:12.24 while Tyler Mooney recorded a time of 5:17.49 as Gabe Feaman recorded a time of 5:20.63. Jacob Hawkins and Dalton Bartlett rounded out the field for Webster with times of 5:36.56 and 5:36.69 respectively.

In the 3000m run, first-year Simon Muthemba was the lone Gorlok in the event as he recorded a time of 9:33.08.

In the 60m hurdles event, Washington set a new personal record and the new  all-time school record with a time of 8.78 seconds that earned 10th overall. With that time, he now ranks second all-time in the SLIAC conference Indoor record books for the event. In addition to Washington, LaRue recorded a time of 9.24 seconds that earned 15th overall in the event. 

In the high jump event, sophomore Nkunim Kauame led the team with a clearing mark of 1.79m. In addition, Thomas Ogata recorded a clearance of 1.74m while Oldani recorded a mark of 1.69m.

In the pole vault event, Mark Govero was the lone Webster competitor in the event as he earned a fifth overall finish with a height of 4.50m.

In the triple jump, Wong recorded a mark of 12.57m while Ogata recorded a mark of 12.02m.

In the shot put, first-year Librado Gil recorded a mark of 8.09m. In the weight throw, Gil recorded a mark of 8.57m. 

The Gorloks will continue the indoor season on Saturday, January 24 competing in the Illinois College Snow Bird Invite starting at 10:00AM in Jacksonville, Illinois.
