Men’s Tennis Falls Short To Illinois Wesleyan In Decatur

Box Score DECATUR, Ill. - The Webster University men's tennis team played in the second match of the spring season with a neutral site match against Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday evening. The Gorloks earned two victories but fell short to the Titans by the final score of 2-5. 

Webster and IWU started the day with double competitions as the Titans took all three doubles matches. The number one doubles team of Ethan Foucheaux and Matthew Birchmeier earned two set victories but dropped the match by the score of 2-6. 

The number two doubles team of Carson Fisher and Eli Bartek battled their opponents and earned four set victories but fell late by the score of 4-6. 

In the final doubles match, WU's Jack Forlenza and Andrew McDonald played their second doubles of the season together and struggled to find any momentum and dropped the match. 

In the number one singles match, Foucheaux opened the match with a 6-3 first set victory but dropped the second set 3-6 that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Foucheaux went toe-to-toe against Ian Turnbull as Turnbull added back-to-back points that eliminated Foucheaux by the final of 14-12 in the final set victory.

In the number two singles match, WU's Fisher battled Ben Vigneri in straight sets but dropped the match by final scores of 6-4 and 6-2. 

In the third singles match, WU's Birchmeier earned three set victories but dropped the match by the scores of 6-0 and 6-3. 

In the fourth singles match, WU's Bartek dropped the opening set to Thad Dillow by the score of 4-6 but responded with a dominant 6-1 victory that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Bartek closed the match with back-to-back points that earned the 6-4 victory. 

In the number five singles match, WU's Forlenza and IWU's Griffin Hammond battled back-and-forth in the opening set that needed extra time. In the extra time, Forlenza scored back-to-back points that secured a 7-5 tiebreaker victory. In the second set, Forlenza earned three set victories but fell by the score of 3-6 that forced another tiebreaker set. Forlenza and Hammond battled toe-to-toe as Forlenza took the tiebreaker set by the score of 11-9 that secured the victory. 

In the final singles match, WU's Shawn Smith earned five set victories but dropped the match to Chase Tomecki in straight sets by the final scores of 4-6 and 1-6. 

The Gorloks will have two and a half weeks of preparation before hosting the Red Wolves of Indiana University East on Wednesday, March 5 starting at 5:00PM at Webster Groves Recreational Complex in Webster Groves, Missouri.
