Gorloks Open Spring Break Play With Two Victories In South Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Webster University men's tennis team opened spring break action in South Carolina with a doubleheader at Hilton Head High School on Wednesday. The Gorloks opened the day with a huge 4-3 victory over Western New England University and followed up with a dominant 6-1 victory over the University of Mount Union. With both victories, Webster improves to 4-4 overall. 

Match 1: Webster 4, Western New England 3

Webster and Western New England opened the match with doubles competition. The number one doubles team of Matthew Birchmeier and Ethan Foucheaux eliminated their opponents in dominant fashion by the score of 6-2. 

The number two doubles team of Carson Fisher and Tyler Gonzales captured three set victories but dropped the match by the score of 6-3. 

The duo team of Jack Forlenza and Shawn Smith outlasted the back-and-forth battle with 6-4 victory. With this victory, the Gorloks took the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.  

WU's Foucheaux opened singles play and eliminated Nick Bayer in straight sets by identical scores of 6-2 and 6-2. 

In the number two singles match, Fisher captured the victory in straight sets by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2. With this victory, the Gorloks took the 4-1 advantage. 

In the number three singles match, Birchmeier captured five set victories but unfortunately dropped the match by the scores of 2-6 and 3-6. 

In the number four singles match, Gonzales battled his opponent closely in the opening set but dropped the set by the score of 4-6. However, he responded in the second set with a 6-4 victory that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Gonzales fell short and unfortunately dropped the match. In the number six singles match, Smith battled his opponent closely but dropped the match in straight sets. 

With the match tied at 3-3, it came down to the number five singles match between WU's Forlenza and WNEU's Brandon Greger. In the first set, both student-athletes battled back-and-forth that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Forlenza outlasted Greger with a 7-5 victory. In the final set, Forlenza won the match for the Gorloks with a 6-4 victory. 


Match Two: Webster 6, Mount Union 1

Webster and Mount Union opened the match with doubles competition as the Gorloks took all three matches. The number one doubles team of Birchmeier and Foucheaux eliminated their opponents by the score of 6-2.

The duo of Fisher and Gonzales dismantled their opponents in shutout fashion by the score of 6-0. 

The number three doubles team of Forlenza and Smith took down their opponents with a dominant 6-1 victory. 

In singles play, Foucheaux played in the number one spot and eliminated Andrew Cavett in straight sets by the scores of 6-2 and 6-4. 

In the number two singles match, Fisher dropped the opening set but responded with a 6-3 victory that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Fisher battled Nick Sziracky closely but fell late by the final score of 7-10. 

WU's Birchmeier played in the number three singles match and eliminated Jacob Timonere in straight sets by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2. 

In the number four singles match, WU's Gonzales took down Luke Deland in straight sets by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1. 

In the number five singles match, Forlenza defeated Noah Fink in dominant fashion by the scores of 6-1 and 6-0. 

In the number six singles match, Smith shutout his opponent in Owen Ralph by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0. 

The Gorloks will continue spring break action on Friday, March 14 with a match against Messiah University starting at 1:00PM at Chaplin Park in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
