Men’s Tennis Conclude Spring Break With Matches Against Messiah And Catholic University

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Webster University men's tennis concluded spring break play with two matches against Messiah University and Catholic University on Friday. The Gorloks dropped the opener to the Falcons by the final score of 1-4 and fell in the nightcap match against the Cardinals by the score of 2-4. 

Match One: Webster 1, Messiah 4 

The match began with doubles competition as the number one team of Matthew Birchmeier and Ethan Foucheaux earned the lone doubles victory for Webster. In the match, Birchmeier and Foucheaux battled their opponents with back-and-forth play but the duo closed out the match by the score of 7-5.

In the number two doubles match, the duo of Carson Fisher and Tyler Gonzales captured two set victories but dropped the match by the score of 2-6. 

In the final doubles match, the team of Jack Forlenza and Shawn Smith earned four set victories but fell by the score of 4-6.

In singles play, Birchmeier recorded the lone singles victory for Webster. In his match against Lance Wilson, Birchmeier went back-and-forth with Wilson that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Birchmeier battled but fell the score of 0-5 and dropped the opening set 6-7. In the second set, he responded with a 6-4 victory that forced a third set. In the third set, Birchmeier got out to an early lead and paced to a 10-4 set victory that won the match. 

In the number two singles match, Fisher was tasked against Brady Hahn as Fisher won the opening set by the score of 6-4. In the second set, Hahn forced a tiebreaker set with a 6-4 victory. In the tiebreaker set, Fisher battled closely but fell by the score of 10-6. 

In the number one singles match, Foucheaux lined up against Chase Wilson and blanked Wilson in the first set 6-0. However, Wilson responded with a 6-4 second set victory that forced a third set. In the third set, Foucheaux's late push fell short by the score of 6-10.

Match Two: Webster 2, Catholic 4

Webster and Catholic opened the match with doubles competition as the Gorloks secured two double wins in the number one and two matches. In the number one doubles match, the duo of Birchmeier and Foucheaux outlasted the tight battle for the 6-4 victory. 

In the number two doubles match, the team of Fisher and Gonzales eliminated their opponents by the score of 6-2. 

In the number three doubles match, the duo of Andrew McDonald and Smith worked together to capture four set victories but dropped the close battle by the score of 4-6. 

In singles play, Foucheaux secured the lone singles victory for the Gorloks. In his match, he got out to an early lead in both sets and eliminated James Earwood in straight sets by the scores of 6-2 and 6-2. 

Fisher played in the number two singles match against Diego Romo and responded with a 6-4 victory in the second set that forced a third set. In the third set, Fisher captured five points but dropped the match 5-10. 

In the third singles match, Birchmeier lined up against Charlie Robbins and secured the 6-4 opening set victory. In the second set, both student-athletes went point-for-point as Robbins took the set 7-6. In the third set, the back-and-forth battle continued as Birchmeier fell just short by the score of 11-9. 

In the fourth singles match, Gonzales captured a total of eight set victories but dropped the match by the scores of 4-6 and 4-6. 

In the sixth singles match, Smith recorded a total of four set victories but dropped the match. 

The Gorloks will play in front of their home crowd for the time in 2025 on Friday, March 21 hosting Monmouth College at 6:30PM at Webster Groves Recreational Complex in Webster Groves, Missouri.
