WU’s McCoy Cards Three-Over 75; Gorloks Ranks Sixth After Opening Round Of SLIAC Championships

EDINBURGH, Ind. - The Webster University golf team opened tournament play at the 2025 SLIAC Championships with the first round at Timbergate Golf Course on Sunday. WU's Justin McCoy led the team with a three-over par score of 75. As a team, the Gorloks recorded a team score of 309 that currently ranks sixth out of 13 teams. 

In the opening round, all student-athletes tee'd off on hole one. McCoy began his round with eight consecutive pars when he carded a bogey on hole nine for a score of 37. On the back nine, the Savoy, Illinois native recorded back-to-back pars on holes 10 and 11 to remain at one-over for the day. On the 12th hole, he took an unfortunate bogey but followed up with a par on the par-five 13th hole. Moments later, he carded a bogey on the par-three 14th hole but closed out the round with four straight pars for a score of 75. For the round, he carded 15 pars and three bogeys. 

A trio of Gorloks in Nico Marin, Cole Makgill, and Jacob LeBlanc all contributed six-over par scores of 78 to the team score. Marin opened his championship with back-to-back pars on holes one and two before carding a bogey on hole three. Following consecutive pars on holes four and five, he got back to even-par for the tournament with a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Moments later on hole seven, Marin carded a birdie that put him one-under for the round. He closed out the front nine holes with back-to-back pars for a two-under par score of 35. 

The international student-athlete from Mexico opened the back nine with consecutive pars on holes 10 and 11. Moments later, he followed up with back-to-back pars on holes 13 and 14 to be at two-over for the round. He closed out the opening round with four consecutive bogeys for the score of 78. For the round, he carded 10 pars, five bogeys, two birdies, and a triple-bogey.

Makgill opened the first round two-over through the first three holes that included par on hole two. Moments later, he answered with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole that went back to one-over par for the day. Over the next three holes, he carded two pars and a bogey on hole six to be at two-over par. He closed out the front nine holes with consecutive bogeys for a score of 40. 

The first-year international student-athlete from New Zealand opened the back nine with 
back-to-back pars on holes 10 and 11. Following an unfortunate double-bogey on hole 12, he responded with a birdie on the par-five 13th hole. He continued the opening round with consecutive pars on holes 14 and 15 before carding a double-bogey in the 16th hole. He closed out the first round with a birdie on hole 18 for the score of 78. For the round, he carded eight pars, five bogeys, three birdies, and two double-bogeys.   
 
LeBlanc opened his tournament with a par on hole one and later carded a par on hole five to be at four-over par. Moments later, he answered with a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole that moved to three-over. Following an unfortunate double-bogey on hole six, he closed out the front nine holes with back-to-pars on holes eight and nine for the score of 41.  

The international student-athlete from Canada opened the back nine with a bogey on hole 10 but followed up three consecutive pars. After a bogey on hole 14, he responded with a birdie on hole 15. He closed out the first round with three straight pars for the score of 78. For the round, he carded 10 pars, four bogeys, two double-bogeys and two birdies.

Senior Trent Garrett rounded out the team score with a seven-par score of 79. He opened the day with a triple-bogey on hole one but later got a stroke back with a birdie on par-3 third hole. Following back-to-back pars on holes four and five, he carded a birdie on hole seven to put him at two-over for the round. He closed out the front nine holes with consecutive bogeys for a score of 40. 

The Chicago, Illinois native opened the back nine with back-to-back pars on holes 10 and 11. Following a bogey on hole 12, he got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-five 13th hole. He continued his round by adding two pars on holes 14 and 16. He closed out the opening round with a birdie on hole 17 and a bogey on hole 18 for the score of 79. For the round, he carded seven pars, five bogeys, four birdies, and two triple-bogeys. 

The Gorloks will resume tournament play tomorrow, Monday May 5 with the second round starting at 10:00AM.
