Merritt Wins Heptathlon Shot Put; Five Other Gorloks Competed In Bearcat Invite

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Six members of the Webster University men's track and field team traveled and competed in the Bearcat Invite hosted by Northwest Missouri State University (Division II). WU's Austin Merritt competed in the heptathlon while five other Gorloks competed in at least one event.

In the Heptathlon, Merritt opened the meet on the track with a second place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 7.08 seconds for 854 points. In the long jump, he recorded a mark of 5.87m that placed seventh overall and earned 559 points. In the shot put event, Merritt earned first place in the event with a mark of 12.40m for 631 points. Merritt closed out Friday in the high jump event and set a new personal record with a clearance of 1.80m which earned fourth overall and 627 points.

On Saturday, Merritt opened the day on the track with the 60m hurdles event and recorded a time of 11.66 seconds that earned 271 points. In the pole vault event, he recorded a clearing height of 3.95m that secured second place and 603 points. However, in the 1000m event, Merritt did not finish which concluded his heptathlon events for the meet.

In the 60m hurdles, Lucas LaRue was the lone Webster competitor and recorded a time of 9.22 seconds.

In the 60m dash prelims, WU's Dylan Patterson recorded a time of 6.99 seconds that placed 30th out of 96 competitors.

In the 400m dash, first-year Kaiden Richardson was the lone Webster competitor in the event and he crossed the finish line with a time of 50.63 seconds.

In the 200m dash event, Patterson was the only Webster student-athlete in the event and he recorded a time of 22.81 seconds.

In the pole vault event, Webster had two competitors which was led by Mark Govero with a clearing height of 4.68m that earned fifth overall. Sophomore pole vaulter Elijah Bohler also competed in the event and cleared 3.93 for 18th place.

The Gorloks will be back in action on February 14th competing at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana.
