Gorloks go wire to wire in 73-58 win over Blackburn

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks started the game on a 16-0 run and wouldn’t look back en route to a 73-58 win over Blackburn College on Wednesday at Webster University. WU scored a season high 73 points and made a season high 27 field goals in the victory.

The Gorloks (6-5, 1-2 SLIAC) started the game knocking down seven of their first 13 shots in the run and held the Beavers (2-9, 2-2 SLIAC) without a point for the first five minutes and did not allow a field goal until the 12:37 mark. BC cut the deficit to 18-12 but Webster pushed its lead back to double digits with a 14-5 spurt. WU had a balanced scoring effort in the frame with six players scoring a bucket. Katy Meyer kept up her strong play with 14 points and six rebounds in the stanza. Michelle McQueen had nine points (all behind the arc) while Julie McGirl had eight. Webster used its hot start to shot 49 percent (16-of-33) from the floor but the Beavers shot the ball just as well shooting 11-for-26 (42 percent).

The second half was much like the first half with the Gorloks getting out to a big lead then Blackburn would nibble away cutting it to single digits before Webster would finally put it away. WU cooled off slightly shooting the ball in the second period only making 11 shots but still managed to shoot 47 percent (27-of-58). The Gorloks had an effective night passing the ball as well finishing the game with 24 assists on the 27 field goals.

McGirl led four Webster in double figures with 16 points while Meyer narrowly missed her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and nine rebounds. McQueen and Erin Chesnek finished with 12 points apiece. McQueen also had a game high eight assists.

Blackburn’s Sierra Shipley led all scorers with 20 points.
