(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster University Gorloks improved to 6-0 at home with a 64-48 victory over MacMurray on Saturday afternoon at Grant Gym. With the victory Webster surpassed its win total of six from last season.
The game started off slow with neither side being able to make shot until
Katy Meyer knocked home a jump shot just over three minutes into the contest. The Gorloks (7-5, 2-2 SLIAC) defense held strong in the early going forcing five turnovers and allowing only two baskets on 12 shots in the first eight minutes. The job on the defensive end allowed WU to build an early 10 point advantage despite its own offensive struggles. Webster forced 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes resulting in nine points to offset the Highlanders (1-9, 1-4 SLIAC) 27-15 advantage on the boards including 9-3 on the offensive glass. Both sides were ice cold from the floor as the Gorloks shot 29 percent (8-of-28) while MC was only 5-for-20 (20 percent).
Webster built a 21 point advantage in the second stanza before MacMurray started creeping back in the game and cut the lead to 58-48 with just over four minutes to play but its leading scorer fouled out off the game with two minutes remaining and could get no closer than that. WU iced the game on a
Michelle McQueen three pointer and an old fashioned three point play by
Jacquelyn Wamser.
Despite its shooting struggles in the opening half the Gorloks rebounded to shoot 48 percent (15-of-31) in the second stanza to finish the game 23-for-59 (39 percent). Webster did its job on the defensive end forcing 32 turnovers 19 of which were steals.
McQueen, Wamser, and
Erin Chesnek all had 11 points to lead WU.
Julie McGirl had nine points and 10 rebounds while Meyer and Danielle Martin had eight apiece.
