Gorloks drop ninth straight road contest, 55-44 at Eureka

(Eureka, Ill.) – The Webster University Gorloks dropped its ninth straight road game dating back to last season 55-44 at Eureka on Saturday afternoon.

Webster (7-7, 2-4 SLIAC) went the first four minutes of the contest without scoring until back-to-back lay-ups by Julie McGirl tied the game 4-4 at the 13:13 mark. Eureka (3-11, 3-4 SLIAC) went ahead for good on a Brittany Gardner jumper at the 11:02 mark. The Gorloks cut a 12-6 deficit to one on a three pointer by Jacquelyn Wamser. That would be the closest WU would get as EC went on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 22-13 with 4:25 remaining in the half. Eureka headed into the break with a 25-16 lead. Webster was only 7-of-29 (24 percent) from the floor while the Red Devils were just a little bit warmer at 39 percent (11-for-28). Each team struggled to hold on to the ball as there were a combined 21 turnovers in the stanza.

McGirl and Wamser led the way for the Gorloks with six points in the opening frame. Gardner led all scorers with 10 points while Nicole Fisher had eight for Eureka.

Things weren’t much better for Webster in the second half as it came out of the break continuing to struggle on the offensive end trailing by 14 points only five minutes in. WU fought back and closed to within eight points on two different occasions but couldn’t get any closer. Eureka led 43-27 with six minutes remaining but a late barrage of threes from the Gorloks cut the lead back down to 10 points but the Red Devils would make their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Wamser finished with 14 points for Webster and was joined by Michelle McQueen in double digits with 12.

After shooting only 24 percent in the first half, the Gorlok offense was only 8-for-37 (22 percent) from the field while Eureka missed only eight shots in the frame (10-of-18) 56 percent.
