(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster University Gorloks women’s basketball squad had its three game winning streak snapped by Washington University 73-33 on Thursday evening at Washington University. Webster recorded season lows in points (33), field goals (10) and shot only 19 percent (10-of-51).
The Gorloks (5-4) struggled early in the contest falling behind 9-0 before getting on the board at the 14:17 mark on pair of free throws by
Julie McGirl (Potosi, Mo.). Webster pulled to within four points a couple of minutes later but a 12-4 run by the Bears (8-3) pushed the lead to double digits and went into the intermission with a 33-14 advantage. The Gorloks were only 5-of-20 (25 percent) from the floor in the frame while Washington U connected on 43 percent (14-of-33) of its attempts. Webster turned the ball over 16 times in the stanza resulting in 15 Bears points.
McGirl had six points in the period to pace Webster while Janice Evans had 11 to lead Washington U.
The second half was a continuation of the first with the Bears scoring eight of the first nine points and they continued to give the Gorloks offense problems holding them to just 5-of-31 (16 percent) from the floor while Washington U connected on 47 percent (16-of-34) and had a 35-13 advantage on the glass.
McGirl finished the game with 10 points to lead Webster and Danielle Martin (Memphis, Tenn.) had eight.
Janice Evans led all scorers with 17 points while Zoe Unruh and Kathryn Berger had 10 apiece.
