(Fulton, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks come from behind effort came up just a bit short in a 63-54 loss at Westminster on Wednesday evening. Webster tried to overcome a 14 point deficit but could get no closer than three points in the second half.
The Gorloks (8-9, 2-6 SLIAC) fell behind 9-0 only three minutes into the game before getting on the board at the 16:07 mark on jumper by
Katy Meyer. The Blue Jays (7-10, 3-6 SLIAC) hot shooting from the floor 12-of-23 (52 percent) helped them build its largest lead of the night at 24-10 at the six minute mark. WU found its offensive rhythm late in the half cutting the lead to 29-23 with 0:32 remaining in the half but WC went into the locker room with an eight point lead after Markie England put back with 0:05 left. Webster was able to stay within striking distance because of its free throw shooting 8-for-12 (67 percent), making seven in a row after missing four of its first five, despite shooting only 37 percent (7-of-19) from the field. The Gorloks out rebounded their hosts by a 15-11 margin but turned it over 16 times in the stanza.
The Blue Jays pushed its lead back to double digits early in the second half leading by as many as 12 before Webster started its comeback. WU closed within 37-33 but seven straight points by Westminster pushed the lead back to 11 with nine minutes to play. The Gorloks made one more surge cutting the lead to three points with 4:13 to play but the defense couldn’t stop Ashley Stanfill as she scored eight of the Blue Jays final 13 points including a perfect 4-of-4 at the charity stripe to pull away with the nine point win.
Webster finished the game shooting only 31 percent (16-of-51) from the floor and was held to just 9-for-32 (28 percent) in the second half while Westminster shot an identical 52 percent (12-for-23) in the frame to finish the game 24-of-46 from the field.
Meyer had 17 points to lead WU with Julie McGirl adding 10 more.
Stanfill finished with a game-high 20 points, 16 in the second half, while Markie England contributed 12 more.
