Gorlok women come up short at Blackburn, 54-46

(Carlinville, Ill.) – The Webster University Gorloks shot only 25 percent (15-60) for the game in its 54-46 loss at Blackburn College on Saturday afternoon in Carlinville, Ill.

    The Gorloks (9-11, 3-8 SLIAC) fell behind quickly 4-0 but bounced back to tie the game at 4-4 almost four minutes into the contest. Blackburn (7-13, 6-6 SLIAC) responded with a 13-5 run holding its largest lead of the half 19-11 at the 6:10 mark. WU picked it up from there scoring nine of the final 12 points in the frame and had a chance to tie the game heading into the break but weren’t able to get a shot off in time. Neither side shot the ball particularly well in the frame with the Beavers connecting on 39 percent (10-of-26) while Webster was 8-of-31 (26 percent). The Gorloks controlled the glass out rebounding BC by a 23-18 margin turning that into a 7-4 advantage in second chance points.

    Julie McGirl had seven points to lead WU in the frame while Sierra Shipley had seven to lead Blackburn.

    Webster started the second half strong and took its only lead of the game at 24-23 early in the stanza. From there the Beavers Meghan Polston took over scoring six straight points during an 8-0 spurt to regain the lead and extend it to seven points. The Gorloks battled back getting to within three on several occasions but never got over the hump as Blackburn answered each time with big shots down the stretch and clutch free throw shooting making 9-of-11 to secure the victory.

    BC warmed up in the second half shooting 46 percent while Webster shot only 7-for-29 (24 percent) in the frame. Polston finished with 14 points, 12 in the second half, to lead all scorers and was joined in double figures by Shipley with 12. Jacquelyn Wamser had 13 points, going 9-of-12 at the foul line, to lead the way for the Gorloks.
