(GAME NOTES)
It’s been a season for adjustment for the Webster women’s basketball team, and Saturday’s game with Eureka will be par for the norm with the Gorloks.
After losing both guards recently, including one to a season-ending injury, Webster will turn to freshman
Bobbiann Auer to handle to majority of the ball-handling duties. Auer, who missed the second half of the last game as a precaution after coming down on her head, will be shifting over to her natural position. It will be Auer’s first career start.
The Webster coaching staff decided to move Auer to the two-guard position early in the season to fill a void behind the team’s primary shooter.
“We’ve adjusted all year long,” said acting head coach Jordan Olufson. “It’s just another adjustment we have to make. We have the right kind of kids to step up to the challenge.”
Despite having to tweak some things in their lineup, Olufson says still expects his team to get out in transition and push the tempo.
Dictating tempo could be a key against a Eureka team that has several players averaging more than 30 minutes per game, and plays only seven players. But, don’t expect the Gorloks to overlook a Red Devil team that brings a 1-11 record in Grant Gymnasium.
“They are a young, feisty team,” said Olufson. “They went into Fontbonne and beat them, which is impressive. It’s a challenge for us to bounce back.
Post play could become more important to Webster’s success, and the Gorloks feature three players that are capable of carrying the load on any given night. In their last game, WU had three players – junior
Julie McGirl, along with freshmen
Ayrica Lockett and
Myrtie Reilly – who recorded double figures in both points and rebounds.
The majority of the perimeter scoring will come from sophomore Katy Meyer and freshman Blaire Underwood. The duo has combined for 46 three-pointers, while the rest of the team has connected on seven.
