Meyer's three lift Gorloks

(GREENVILLE BOX SCORE)

With a team littered with inexperience, it was one of the veterans that illuminated a potential dark ending.

Sophomore Katy Meyer drilled a 26-foot three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to give Webster a one-point lead, then sealed the victory on a steal with 0.3 seconds left. She made one of two from the foul for the final margin as Webster secured its first road victory of the season, beating Greenville, 67-65, Saturday at HJ Long Gymnasium.

She finished with 21 points – one off her career-high – on 7-of-13 shooting to lead the Gorloks. Webster is now 7-1 on the season when the sophomore forward scores in double figures.

The three-pointer came as Webster had its 11-point second half advantage fully evaporated and trailing for the first time since it was 2-0.

Webster started to succumb to the relentless fullcourt attacking defense deployed by the Panthers. The Gorloks committed five turnovers during a four-minute stretch allowing its eight-point lead with 4:41 to be completely erased with 47 left in the contest. WU had a chance to reclaim the lead on the next possession but missed both free throws.

Greenville added to its one-point lead advantage with one-of-two from the foul line. The missed free throw came back to haunt the home team when step back three-pointer from Meyer went through the nets.

Over a seven minute stretch spanning the end of the first and beginning of the second halves, Webster scored 14 of the game’s 18 points to take control of the game. The spurt gave the Gorloks their largest lead of the game at 11 points.

Freshman Ayrica Lockett secured her fifth consecutive double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Blaire Underwood added 14 points.

Webster (9-7 overall, 4-4 SLIAC) will host Westminster 6 p.m. Wednesday.

QUOTES
Acting Head Coach Jordan Olufson
On the importance of the road win

“You have to win on the road. You need to win at home and steal some on the road.”

On Katy Meyer’s winning basket

“We could have taken the two, but she got a good look at it and hit it. When great players are given the opportunity, they knock it down.
