Webster prepares for Highlanders

(MacMurray Game Notes)

Webster usually responds from a loss with a victory. Only one time this season has that failed to become fact and the Gorloks will be looking to keep it from happening twice.

Coming off Wednesday’s home loss to Westminster, Webster needs a win Saturday to prevent falling further behind in the race to the conference tournament. The Gorloks are currently one game behind Blackburn for the fourth, and final, spot in the postseason tournament. But, with seven SLIAC games to be played, tournament talk can be a little premature.

Posting a win, and completing a sweep over MacMurray, is the only focus for the Gorloks Saturday. Webster limited the Highlanders to 20 percent shooting in the second half, turning a 10-point halftime deficit into a 10-point victory. Additionally, WU forced 28 MacMurray turnovers in the victory.

The Highlanders enter the game with the SLIAC’s top two scorers in Abby Lowe and Taylor Vollmer, yet rank sixth in the conference in scoring offense. Part of the problems for MC is the duo is responsible for 62 percent of the team’s scoring and 56 percent of the shots.

Freshman post players Ayrica Lockett and Myrtie Reilly are leading four players in double figures with 11.0 points per game. Sharpshooters Blaire Underwood and Katy Meyer are helping give WU balance with 10.9 and 10.5 points, respectively. They have combined to convert 67 three-pointers. In contrast, the rest of the roster has made 10 collectively.

The game will feature three of the conference best offensive rebounders in Vollmer, Lockett and WU junior, Julie McGirl. Vollmer leads the SLIAC 70 offensive boards, while Lockett and McGirl are second and fourth, respectively. Lockett has pulled down 64 offensive boards, while McGirl hit the glass for 54.

Webster’s duo is one of the reasons with the Gorloks are leading the SLIAC in offensive rebounds, hauling in 17.71 per game.

Vollmer is second in the SLIAC averaging 10.0 rebounds and Lockett is third with 8.4.
