Rebounding, free throws woes equal loss

(MacMurray Box Score)

JACKSONVILLE, IL – Rebounding and free throws, two usually reliable aspects of a Gorlok performance came back to haunt them.

A driving lay-up and free throw with five seconds left gave MacMurray the 63-60 victory over Webster Saturday in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Wall Gymnasium.

Webster allowed the Highlanders to record 22 offensive rebounds, leading to 22 second chance points. Additionally, the Gorloks were just 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) from the foul line. WU entered the game allowing just nine offensive rebounds and shooting 73 percent from the foul line.

After sophomore Katy Meyer knotted the game at 60 with 1:15 remaining on her second three pointer of the game, Webster had two possessions to claim the lead. One ended with a turnover, and then they had two missed free throws.

Freshman Myrtie Reilly capped an 8-0 run with 3:54 allowing the Gorloks to comeback from its largest deficit of the game, 55-47. However, a Highlander three-pointer on the subsequent possession gave MC the lead back – a lead they never fully relinquished.

Webster raced out to a seven-point lead (14-7) in the opening moments, and led for the better part of the first 14 minutes. Eventually, MC clawed back into the game, took its first lead at 20-18. The two-point lead (30-24) was taken into the intermission thanks to a three-pointer at the buzzer.

MacMurray pushed its lead to seven points and several occasions before Meyer pulled them even at 60.

Junior Julie McGirl finished with 17 points, 13 of which were scored in the first half, and 12 rebounds. It was her fourth double-double of the season. Katy Meyer added 10 points and five rebounds.

QUOTES

Acting head coach Jordan Olufson

“It was a bad loss. They simply outworked us. We didn’t show up. MacMurray flat outworked us. They went after loose balls, while we stood there. … We have to get better with the fundamentals, boxing out, taking the ball to the basket and coming to a jump stop.”
