Gorloks overwhelmed by Wash U

(BOX SCORE)

Outworked. Outhustled. Outplayed.

For a team that took a four-game winning streak into winter vacation, the beginning of 2009 has been tough on Webster as the Gorloks dropped their second straight game of the  new year, 78-46, to Washington University Monday in Grant Gymnasium.

The loss also snapped the Gorloks' five-game home winning streak, and Webster suffered just its second defeat in Grant Gymnasium.

The essence and soul of the outcome came in the first half as the Bears pounded the glass for 10 offensive rebounds, leading to 13 second chance points. Washington used that to take a 24-point advantage into the break.

Junior Julie McGirl led the Gorloks with 18 points and seven rebounds. She was one of three Webster players to record seven boards in the contest as she was joined by sophomore Katy Meyer and freshman Myrtie Reilly. The seven caroms represented a career-high for Reilly, who was playing in just her second game in a Webster uniform.

Webster (6-5) looks to rebound and snap its second game losing streak when the Gorloks host Fontbonne Wednesday in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

NOTES
  • The loss snapped Webster's five-game home winning streak.
  • It was the Gorloks' lowest scoring output of the season by 13 points. Webster scored 59 points in a three-point victory over Marian.
  • Freshman Blaire Underwood failed to hit a three-pointer for the first time this season, and the one conversation was the lowest of the season. The Gorloks hit two in the loss to St. Ambrose in the second game of the season.

Initial Comments

"We just got outworked and outplayed, start to finish. We played hard, they just played harder."

on moving forward

"The best way (to move on) is to prepare for the next game. I told the girls in the locker room to leave this game on the floor. The next game (against Fontbonne) effects our postseason and regular season. We have 40 minutes to lock in one Wednesday night."

on Bobbianne Auer

"Bobbi is the heart and soul of the team. Whether she plays eight or 28 minutes, she gives you everything on every possession. If everyone had her mentality and attitude, we would be a lot tougher team to play."
