Near triple-double lifts WU in OT

With the combination of strength, length and athleticism, Webster dominated the area around the rim in evening its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record at 2-2 with a 82-76 overtime victory over rival Fontbonne Wednesday at Grant Gymnasium.

The inside tandem of freshmen Ayrica Lockett and Myrtie Reilly combined for 38 points, 26 rebounds and seven blocks as the Gorloks held a 46-28 advantage in points scored in the paint. Reilly recorded her first career double-double, and nearly achieved a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. All seven of her blocks came in the second half, including three in the overtime session. The block party helped hold the Griffins to just 10 percent shooting (1-of-10) in the extra five minutes.

It was Lockett that did the damage in the first half allowing the slow starting Gorloks to stay with reach of the visitors. Using her speed down the court, she scored 11 points mostly on fast-break layups.  The uptempo pace was beneficial to Webster as they scored 20 points in transition.

The game marked the ninth time this season Webster has trailed at the break, and WU fell down early as Fontbonne scored 12 of the game's first 16 points. The Gorloks had several opportunities to take the lead in the first half, but couldn't seem to get over the proverbial hump.

The hump eroded and the luck changed early in the second stanza as Lockett scored on back-to-back layups to cap a 6-0 run - giving Webster its first lead of the game. It was a yo-yo of momentum for the rest of a contest that witnessed nine ties and 11 lead changes in the second half.

Webster put the finishing touches on the victory by scoring six of the last seven points in the final minute.

Freshman Courtney Brown added 21 points and four assists, while senior Erin Chesnek scored a season-high nine points.

Webster snaps a brief two-game skid, and improves to 7-5 overall, 2-2 in the SLIAC. The Gorloks will have a week off before continuing their four-game homestand with Maryville.

"I didn't think we played particularly well tonight. The girls played their tails off, and I thought we adjusted well to how the game was being called."

"In order to win a lot of games, you need a post presence. Ayrica (Lockett) and Myrtie (Reilly) are two different types of players. One in physical and the other can just lay the ball in. When you have a team like Fontbonne that penetrates and gets to the hoop, its nice to have someone back there to block and alter some shots. Ayrica did a fantastic jobs of rebounding. She had a tough assignment, playing no help side and was still able to get some boards."
