The Webster University women’s basketball team opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a 66-60 win at home over Blackburn College, on December 2. The Gorloks built a wide lead over the Beavers, a pre-season favorite in the SLIAC, and hung on in the final minutes for the win.
Webster pulled to a 30-11 lead at 16:30 of the first half but entered the locker room up by seven as a 10-0 run by the Beavers cut it to seven, 36-29, at halftime. The Gorloks again extended the lead to 17 at 16:30, but the determined Beavers whittled it down to three with 2:40 left in the game. Webster took advantage of Blackburn’s inability to hit free throws, by converting its own, and sealed the victory.
Tori Fenemor (FR, St. Charles HS, STL) led the Gorloks with 16 points and seven rebounds and Maggie Zehner (FR, Oakville HS, STL) added 15 points. Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroads Prep, STL) cleaned the boards with 10 rebounds and chipped in six points.
Blackburn College was second in the SLIAC coaches pre-season poll, collecting the most first place votes in the process. Webster snapped a three-game losing streak against the Beavers and are 3-2 on the season.
A large crowd was on hand as the Alumni Association provided snacks and drinks, and the Athletic Department held receptions for basketball parents of both teams, before both games.
Webster hits the road for another SLIAC contest on December 5 versus MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL. The next home game will be on December 12 against Logan College.
