Gorloks take on Saints, streak

(Maryville Game Notes)

While the main prize of making the conference tournament is no longer attainable, the Webster women’s basketball team still has plenty to play for.

With a team that is starting three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior, any time on the court in competition is vital to their continued development. Additionally, the Gorloks are looking to improve on last season’s performance of 11-14. A couple of victories in their last three games would not only improve on last season’s overall record, but last year’s sixth place finish in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Two single season records are slated to fall before the end of the 2008-09 campaign. Freshman Myrtie Reilly, a midseason transfer, needs three blocks to set a new mark, while freshman Blaire Underwood and sophomore Katy Meyer are looking to shoot down the three-point mark of 49 set by Katie Martin in the 1997-98 season.

It once seemed like a lock that Underwood would mow down the 11-year record, but Meyer has come on lately. In the last seven games, Meyer has converted 20 of her 41 three-pointers, while Underwood has made just nine of her 44.

Meyer and freshman Ayrica Lockett are two of four Webster players scoring at least 10 per game points with 10.7 marks each. The pair is also 1-2 on the season in rebounding with Lockett pulling down a team-high 8.4, followed by Meyer’s 7.2.

Junior Julie McGirl is netting 10.5 points, while Underwood is recording 10.2 points. Reilly is on the cusp of double figures with 9.8 points per contest.

Maryville enters the game on a NCAA record 88-game SLIAC winning streak and 45-game home SLIAC winning streak. The Saints have only three games remaining before they would be able to retire from Division III with a 91-game streak. Maryville moves to Division II next season.

Guard Sara Wemlinger and forward Allie Wilhelm are averaging 11.1 and 10.5 points per game, respectively, for a Saints team that leads the conference in scoring offense and scoring defense.
