(Greenville Game Notes)
The opportunity to improve on last season’s 11-14 season could still become reality for the Webster women’s basketball team. With home victories, the Gorloks would finish the 2008-09 season at 12-13 – a one-game improvement over last season.
Improving on last year’s record is just one of the things, the Gorloks are looking to achieve this season.
With three blocks in the loss to Maryville, freshman Myrtie Reilly, set a new single-season block mark at 52. A midseason transfer, Reilly has the most blocks of any SLIAC player, but is ineligible for league standings because she hasn’t played in 75 percent of the teams games.
The single-season three-point record is in peril as well. Two players – freshman Blaire Underwood and sophomore Katy Meyer – have a chance to set a new mark. Underwood is tied for second with 44, while Meyer is fourth with 42. Midway through the season it looked as though Underwood would be a lock to surpass the record of 49.
However, the freshman guard has cooled as of late, while Meyer has turned it on. In the last eight games, Meyer has converted half of her 42 three-pointers, while Underwood has made just nine of her 44. Coincidently, it was the game against Greenville that jump-started Meyer’s recent streak.
In that game, the sophomore went 4-of-8 from behind the arc, including a 26-footer for the game winner. Since then, Meyer is 21-of-38 (55 percent) from long range.
Freshman Ayrica Lockett is leading the team with 11.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while Meyer is second with 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds. Junior Julie McGirl is adding 10.5 points per game and 6.3 rebounds, while two other players are near the double-figure mark. Freshman Blaire Underwood, who has spent most of the season over 10 points is currently sitting at 9.8, and Reilly is adding 9.9 points per game.
The Panthers come into Saturday’s game having lost 12 of their last 14 games, including six straight.
Greenville’s backcourt of Meredith Banal, Stacy Lawrence and Tia Sarver has carried the brunt of the Panthers’ scoring load. The trio is responsible for 47 percent of the team’s scoring output with 593 of the team’s 1,299 points.
Inside, GC is paced by forwards Susan Githinji and Danya Teiwes. The pair is grabbing 5.3 and 5.7 rebounds per game, respectively. Teiwes, a reserve forward, is leading the team with 40 blocks.
