The Webster University men's basketball team kept up an unusual road trend, and in the process jumped into a three-way tie for second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with its 72-52 at Blackburn College (IL) on January 27. All three SLIAC road wins for the Gorloks this season have been blow-outs by no less than 19 points.
John Ortwerth (SR, DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL) led the way in the victory with a career high 25 points.
Ortwerth had 14 of his 25 points in the first half and added five rebounds, finishing with eight for the game.
Drew Moore (JR, Northwest HS, STL) had a personal high, and team season-high, 13 rebounds for the game.
Robby Meeh (JR, Lindbergh HS, STL) came off the bench to score 13 points on 5 for 6 shooting from the field. The Gorloks also had a season-high 23 assists, led by
NIck Jones (JR, Heritage HS, IL) with six and Scott Restoff's (JR, Mater Dei HS, IL) with five.
Blackburn took an early lead but a trey of three-pointers, one by Restoff, and two by Jones pulled Webster even. The Gorloks were down by four with 9:30 left in the first half, but outscored the Beavers 18-4 to enter the locker room up by eight, before pulling away in the second half.
The win gives Webster a 6-3 record in the SLIAC, and places the team in a three-way tie for second, making for an exciting conference stretch run. In running its SLIAC road record to 3-2, Webster has recorded victories of 19, 20, and 21 points. One of the Gorloks road losses was to MacMurray College (IL), who will visit Webster on January 30.
At halftime of the MacMurray game, the inaugural class of the Webster University Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducted. A reception for the inductees will be held after the game at the Alumni House on Garden Avenue.
