Roller Coaster Ride Ends In OT Loss For Gorloks

Blackburn College 73 Webster 65 (OT)

The Webster University women's basketball team battled back several times but couldn't overcome  Blackburn College, losing in overtime, 73-65, on January 27, in Carlinville, IL.  The loss drops the Gorloks into a first-place tie in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference race.

Both teams traded baskets through most of the first half, but Blackburn rode a 5-0 run to lead 32-26 at the half.  An 8-0 run by the Beavers to start the second half, dropped Webster in a 14 point hole.  The Gorloks made their move, down by seven, with two minutes remaining.  Maggie Zehner (FR, Oakville HS, STL) canned a pair of free throws, and a subsequent steal by Zehner led to another pair of free throws, this time by Megan Willett (SO, Parkway West HS, STL).    A steal by Bobbiann Auer (SO, Oakville HS, STL) and a basket by Barissa Ford (JR, Clayton HS, STL), cut the lead to one.

Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroads Prep, STL) completed the comeback with a jumper at 28 seconds, to tie the game at 62-62 and send it into overtime.  Webster was outscored 11-3 in the overtime period as it only hit one of seven shots.  Catherine Russell (FR, Clyde C. Miller Academy, STL) led the Gorloks with 14 points and had five rebounds.  Willett had 12 points and three assists.  Lockett had six rebounds to lead Webster.

Webster is tied for first in the SLIAC at 7-2.  The loss bunches up the standings, with two other teams tied for third, one game behind at 6-3.  The Gorloks are 11-6 overall and have a home date with MacMurray College (IL) on January 30.
