The roller coaster ride that was the 2009-2010 Webster University men's basketball season ended with a first-round loss in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Gorloks lost, 87-69, to Westminster College in Fulton, MO. Juniors
Scott Restoff (Mater Dei HS, IL), and
Drew Moore (Northwest HS, STL) carried the scoring load for the Gorloks with Restoff hitting 19 points and Moore 18.
Since an injury to then team-leading scorer
Nick Jones (Heritage HS, IL), Moore and Restoff averaged 21 points and 16 points for the final five games, respectively, and 13.3 and 9.8 per game for the season. A bright spot already for the 2010-2011 season, the Gorloks return their three leading scorers (Moore, Jones, Restoff) and five of their top six.
Westminster had a 17-point lead at the half and extended it to 21, but a 13-0 run by Webster pulled them within eight with 14 minutes remaining in the game. It was the closest the Gorloks would get as 13 Bluejay 3-pointers kept Webster off stride throughout the contest.
In an up and down season, Webster reeled off three straight wins early before dropping four in a row. The Gorloks came right back to win five out of six, but four losses in six games, including three in OT, followed. Webster finished with another three-game streak to capture fourth place in the SLIAC at 10-6 and gain a berth in the tournament.
Exciting moments dotted the schedule, starting in November. A Moore basket at the buzzer beat LaGrange College (GA) 68-67, for the season's first victory. In their next game, the Gorloks snuck out of Decatur, IL, as two missed free throws by Millilkin University with :04 left, let Webster escape with a 46-44 win. The Gorloks gave #1 ranked Washington University a scare on the road, before losing 69-60. In its final home game, Webster's defense held steady as Spalding University (KY) had the ball for the final :24, down by one, but couldn't manage to score in a 55-54 victory on Feb. 20.
Against Westminster, five seniors played their final game in a Gorlok uniform: Justin Endo (Seabury Hall, HI), John Ortwerth (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL), Reggie Smith (Bollingbrook HS, IL), Mat Trippett (New Haven HS, MO), and Josue Whitcomb (Blue Valley West HS, KS). These five, plus Jerry Strickland (Hesperia HS, CA), were recognized in a ceremony on February 16 at Grant Gymnasium.
Webster ends the season 13-13 overall. Westminster will go on to face Eureka College (IL) in the championship of the SLIAC tournament on February 27. SLIAC All-Conference teams will be announced at the conclusion of the tournament.
