Box Score It took a little longer than it wanted, but the Webster women's basketball team won its first contest of the season with a 67-63 win over Austin College (TX), on December 11, at Grant Gymnasium. A solid defense and improved shooting were keys to the Gorloks' victory. A pair of Megan Willett (SR, Parkway West HS) free throws with 8.9 seconds sealed what could have been a much easier win.
Webster's pressure defense contributed to 10 Kangaroo first half turnovers, and limited them to 5-16 shooting from within the three point arc. But Austin kept within striking distance on 6-10 three-point shooting and trailed 36-30 at the half. Webster increased its lead to 50-37 in the second, but a 19-6 Roo run cut the Gorloks lead to one, 57-56. A Gwen Williams (JR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS) steal and lay-up at 2:50 put Webster back in control but an Austin 3-pointer at 1:20 tied the game at 61.
Not until Willett's free throws iced the contest could the Gorloks breath easy. Webster forced 19 Kangaroo turnovers while giving up only eight. Williams led the team with 15 points and had three steals for the game. Maggie Zehner (JR, Oakville HS) had a season high six assists and added eight points. Willett had 11 points and was 5-6 from the free throw line.
Webster will travel down Big Bend Blvd. to face Washington University on December 17. The Gorloks head to Terre Haute, IN, to face Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on December 19. Their next home game is on December 30 vs. the College of St. Scholastica (MN) at Grant Gymnasium.
