Box Score Unable to repeat last year’s magic, the Webster University women’s basketball team fell in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament to host Westminster College, 69-34, on February 24. The Gorloks upset the Blue Jays in the 2011 championship game, also in Fulton, but 2012 was a different outcome, as Westminster proved too strong.
Webster fought valiantly in the first half, despite several key players nursing injuries, and went into halftime down by six, 33-27. But the second half was a different story as the Blue Jays shut down the Gorloks completely, outscoring them 36-7 and making sure no repeat of 2011 would occur.
Sophomore Courtney Pursley (St. Clair HS, MO) was a bright spot, leading the Gorloks with 10 points and nine rebounds. For her efforts, Pursley was named to the SLIAC 2012 All-Tournament Team. Cassie Endicott (FR, Civic Memorial HS, IL) had six points, tied Pursley with nine rebounds, and had three blocks.
Several Gorloks received SLIAC post-season awards, including Endicott, who was voted Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference Honorable Mention, and Maggie Zehner (Oakville HS), who took home Second Team All-Conference honors. Endicott and Zehner were also voted to the All-Defensive Team and Megan Willett (SR, Parkway West HS) was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Seven seniors concluded their Webster basketball careers with the loss. Amanda Arcangel (Immaculate Heart HS, CA), Loren Douglas (Marquette HS), Tori Fenemor (St. Charles HS), Barissa Ford (Clayton HS), Tyeila Gant (Lee’s Summit Christian HS, MO), Blaire Underwood (Webster Groves HS), and Megan Willett (Parkway West HS) all wore the Webster uniform for a final time.
Webster ends the season 12-14 overall, after finishing 10-6 in the SLIAC and in fourth place. With 11 returning players and several recruits already committed for 2012-13, the Gorloks have reason to look forward to next season.
