Webster Flummoxes Fontbonne, 64-58

Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team improved to 5-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 64-58 victory over Fontbonne University, on January 17, at Grant Gymnasium.   The Gorloks overcame an 11-point deficit in the first, and a 40-point second half output propelled them to the win in the first "Battle of Big Bend" encounter in 2012-13.

Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO) notched another 20 point scoring effort, her fourth in her last five games, hitting 20 points on the dot on 7-15 shooting.  Zehner added six rebounds and four assists on the night.  Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had a double double, dropping in 13 points and pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.  Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) had 11 points, six rebounds, and a team-high five steals.

Webster fell behind,25-14, with 6:00 left in the first half.  Two steals by Williams helped fuel a Gorlok 8-0 run as they edged to, 25-22, with 2:45 left in the half.  A Pursley lay up at the buzzer sent Webster into the locker room down, 26-24.  After its second best shooting game two nights earlier, Webster shot 28% in the first half, including 1-11 from the three point line.  But in the second half Webster warmed up, shooting 48% (14-29).  The Gorloks also outrebounded Fontbonne, 21-10, in the second half, including 10-3 on the offensive boards.
 
In the second half, a Zehner steal and layup gave Webster a 54-52 lead with 6:40 remaining.  After exchanging leads, Zehner hit a jumper at 1:45 to give the Gorloks the lead for good, 58-56.  Pursley had a lay up as the shot clock expired with 51 seconds left in the contest, giving Webster a four-point bulge, 60-56.  A pair of Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) free throws with :23 left in the contest iced the win.

With the 20 points, Zehner moves into seventh place on Webster's career all-time scoring list.  Zehner now has 948 points, passing Kim Sheets, who had 932 points from 2002-2005.  Next on the list in sixth place is Mikki McCune, who had 989 points from 1994-1998.

The Gorloks came into the game tied for second with Fontbonne and Spalding University (KY) in the SLIAC at 4-2.  Fontbonne fell a game behind at 4-3 with the loss.  Webster remains tied with Spalding at 5-2.  Webster evened its overal season record at 8-8.

The Gorloks have back to back road games at Principia College (IL), on January 19, and MacMurray College (IL) on January 23.  Webster returns home on January 26 to face Eureka College at Grant Gymnasium.
