Box Score Continuing on a victorious path on the road in the St. Louis Intercollegiatel Athletic Conference, the Webster University women's basketball team defeated MacMurray College, 63-51, in Jacksonville, IL, on January 23. The Gorloks are now 5-1 away from home in the SLIAC, with its only defeat in OT at Greenville College, and are 7-2 in the conference overall.
The win was Webster's fifth straight as the team continues to hold onto second place in the SLIAC with the victory. The Gorloks improved to 10-8 overall on the season. With the win, Webster avenges a rare home loss they sustained to MacMurray, 71-64, on January 8 at Grant. The Gorloks had defeated the Highlanders 14 straight at home, dating back to 1998, before that loss.
Webster grabbed a 37-28 halftime lead as Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO) continued her scoring blitz on SLIAC opponents, piling up 16 points at the midway mark. Zehner was 4-4 from beyond the three-point line as the Gorloks were a perfect 5-5 as a team in the half. The Gorloks were able to maintain their lead throughout the second half, even shooting only 29% from the field (7-24) as the Highlanders obliged with a 29% (8-27) performance of their own.
Zehner finished with 20 points on the evening, and has 981 points for her career at Webster. She is five points shy of sixth place on the team's all-time scoring list, as Mikki McCune (1994-98) is next with 986 points. Zehner is 19 points away from becoming just the sixth Gorlok in team history to break the 1000 point barrier.
Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) had 13 points for Webster, and had a team-high four steals in the contest. Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) had a team-high six rebounds, and adding eight points in the win.
Webster will return home on January 26 when they face Eureka College (IL) at Grant Gymnasium. That is the start of five straight home games in the SLIAC for the Gorloks.
