Gorloks Fall to Blue Jays in SLIAC Championship

Box Score Hoping to repeat its win at Fulton earlier this season, the Webster University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a resilient Westminster College squad, losing 71-55, in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship game.  The Blue Jays proved once again how tough of a row they are to hoe, having won 46 of its last 50 SLIAC matches and losing only two, including the Webster victory, at home.

The Gorloks were down 26-23 with 2:00 left in the first half, and after a Blue Jay three, Webster trailed 29-23 at the break.  Shooting was the difference throughout the contest as Webster shot a cool 31% from the field in the first half, going only one for eight from the three-point line.  Westminster wasn't a lot better at 36% overall, but the Blue Jays were five for 11 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, Webster's shooting improved to 38%, including three for six from the three-point line.  But Westminster shot 45% overall and added five more three-pointers in nine attempts, slowly pulling away as the game wound down.  On paper for the game, the Gorloks and Blue Jays were even in most every other category including rebounds, turnovers, blocks, and even fouls.

Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO), ending her standout career at Webster, led the Gorloks with a team-high 14 points and four assists, and tied for the lead with seven rebounds.  Zehner also moved into seventh place on Webster's all-time season-high point total list with 410, passing Katy Meyer (2010-11) at 397.  She winds up as the fourth all-time career scorer for Webster as well, with 1121 points.

Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO), also playing her final game as a Gorlok, had 11 points and two steals on the afternoon.  Williams and Zehner were both named to the 2013 SLIAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts against Westminster and in the 73-67 semi-final win over Eureka College (IL).

Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) tied Zehner for the team lead with seven rebounds and added seven points.  Cassie Endicott (SO, Civic Memorial HS, IL) had eight points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.   Also playing in her final game for Webster was Airyn Miller (SR, Belleville West HS, IL).

Webster finished second in the SLIAC at 11-5 and wound up 15-12 overall on the season.
