Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team opened its season with a 70-51 win over Dominican University (IL), in the Cavallo Tip-Off at Grant Gymnasium, on November 15. Ashley Brooks had 20 points to lead the Gorloks in the victory.
Webster built a 32-17 halftime lead as they held the Stars to 7-35 (20%) shooting from the field. The Gorloks were 15-33 (45.5%) from the field, had 26 first half rebounds, and 10 steals.
The Gorloks kept the pressure on in the second half, with the Stars unable to narrow the gap to under double digits. Webster shot an even more robust 15-27 (55.5%) in the second half and wound up at an even 50% (30-60) from the field for the game.
Webster forced 28 Dominican turnovers, and wound up with 18 steals. The Gorloks had 41 rebounds for the evening, including 11 offensive rebounds.
Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) was 9-14 from the field, including 2-4 from beyond the arc, had a team-high four assists, and added two steals and five rebounds for an all-around effort.
DeRita Silas (JR, Houston, TX/Stratford HS) had eight points, five rebounds, and three steals in her first game for the Gorloks. Cassie Endicott (SR, Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) had eight points and five rebounds as well.
Freshman Taylor Lucas (FR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) came off the bench and had eight points on 4-7 shooting and five rebounds in her first collegiate contest.
This was the third straight season the Gorloks opened the season with a win, all coming in the Cavallo Tip-Off.
The Gorloks (1-0) will play Bluffton University (OH) in the second day of the Tip-Off, on November 16. Bluffton lost to Spalding University (KY), 72-57, in first round action.
