Golden Eagles Glide by Gorloks, 83-57

Box Score Facing an undefeated conference foe on the road, the Webster University women's basketball team lost to Spalding University, 83-57, on January 14 in Louisville, KY.  The Golden Eagles, who are now 8-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, showed why they hold down the top spot in the league.

The Golden Eagles took a 20-10 lead at the midway point in the first half.  Back to back three pointers by Danielle Meadows (SO, Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) and Mia Williams (JR, St. Louis, MO/Hazelwood West HS) cut the Spalding lead to 29-20 with 5:00 remaining.  But Spalding closed out half with 12-6 run to take a 41-26 halftime lead.

The Gorloks shot 42% to the Golden Eagles' 47% for the half, with each team grabbing 15 rebounds.  A major difference in the half and in the game were turnovers.  Webster turned the ball over 14 times in each half, with 28 total compared to 15 for Spalding on the evening..  The Golden Eagles also went to the charity stripe 15 times in the first half, making 10, as the Gorloks took only three free throws.  Spalding wound up out rebounding Webster for the game, 39-31, actually grabbing more offensive boards (20) than defensive (19) in the game.

In that second half, Spalding extended its lead to 60-36, with 11:40 left, and to 70-43, with 6:20 to go, never being seriously challenged by the Gorloks.  Complicating matters for Webster, starting guard Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) was injured with 1:18 left in the first half and did not return for the second half.  Senior Cassie Endicott got into foul trouble in the first half, limiting her time on the floor.  She would foul out in the second half.

With nine points in the game, Endicott (SR, Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) has 753 career points, moving her into 11th place on Webster's all-time high list.  Endicott passed Laura Stuhlman-Peiter (1998-02) who had 746 points in her career.  Endicott also had six rebounds on the evening.

Brittany Harris-Conway (JR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) led the Gorloks with 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line.  Meadows had nine points, all coming from the three-point line as she went 3-6 from beyond the arc, and had six rebounds.

Webster falls to 2-5 in the SLIAC and 5-9 overall.  The Gorloks have lost eight of nine after a 4-1 start to the season.

The Gorloks host Big Bend rival, Fontbonne University, on January 17 at Grant Gymnasium.  Webster then travels to Carlinville, IL, on January 21 to play Blackburn College.
