Gorloks Back in Win Column, 52-47, Over Griffins

Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team got back on the winning track, beating Big Bend rival Fontbonne University, 52-47, on January 17 at Grant Gymnasium.  Cassie Endicott (SR, Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) led the Gorloks with 17 points in a hard-fought St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Griffins.

The first half was up and down the court action, with four ties and four lead changes in the period.  A Danielle Meadows (SO, Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) three-pointer late in the half gave Webster the lead heading into the locker room, 28-27.

Meadows' three-pointer was the only one scored by either team in the half.  Brittany Harris-Conway (JR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) and Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) led the Gorloks with eight points, and Harris-Conway had seven rebounds for the session.

The Griffins edged back on top, 35-33 at 14:30 in the second, and held the lead until an Alyssa Sapp (JR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone HS) three-pointer put Webster back on top, 44-42, at the 4:20 mark.   The Gorloks battled over the game's final minutes, with key free throws by Endicott and Sapp, to hang on to the lead.

Endicott was 6-13 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line.  She now has 178 free throws for her career, moving her into 9th place on Webster's all-time high list.  Endicott passed Mikki McCune (1994-98), who had 174 free throws for her career.

Harris-Conway finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Sapp  came off the bench to score seven points, grab six rebounds, and hand out three assists.

Webster has won five of the last six meetings vs. Fontbonne.  An important win for the conference, the Gorloks improve to 3-5 in the SLIAC and 6-9 overall.   Fontbonne falls to 3-5 and 7-8 overall.

The Gorloks travel to Carlinville, IL, to face Blackburn College on January 21.  They return home on January 24 to host Westminster College at Grant Gymnasium.
