Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team saw the best and worst of times in a 71-69 loss at Eureka College (IL) on January 3. The Gorloks' had a large first half run to erase a Red Devil lead, only to see Eureka turn the tables in the second half, overcoming a 15-point deficit to nip Webster.
Webster led, 45-30, several minutes into the second half, but Eureka tied it up, 62-62, with 3:11 left in the contest. A Brittany Harris-Conway (JR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) layup and a 3-pointer by Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) gave the Gorloks the lead again, 67-62, with 2:15 left.
But that would be it for Webster. The Red Devils fought back and tied game up, 69-69, at the 0:45 mark and took a 71-69 lead with 15 seconds left. A three-point attempt by Mia Willams (JR, St. Louis, MO/Hazelwood West HS) and a layup at the buzzer by Harris-Conway both missed the mark and the Gorloks fell to 2-2 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks trailed, 23-13, in the first half before catching fire. Fueled by three Brooks three-pointers and a pair of layups by senior center Cassie Endicott (Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS), a 19-1 run in six minutes gave Webster a 32-26 lead at 3:26. Webster took a 38-30 lead at the half. Endicott wound up the half with 15 points and Brooks 11 as Webster shot 44% from the field.
Webster started the second half with a 7-0 run. Harris-Conway had a layup and Williams hit a three-pointer, and added a layup as well, as the Gorloks extended their lead to 45-30, before the Red Devils began their charge.
Endicott led Webster in points with 19, and rebounds with eight. Endicott moved into 12th place on Webster's all-time career scoring list with 730 points. She passed Julie McGirl (2001-04), who ended her career with 727 points for the Gorloks.
Brooks finished with 14 points, and Harris-Conway had 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the game. Danielle Meadows (SO, Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) had 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the field, 3-4 from beyond the arc.
The Gorloks fell to 5-6 overall with the loss and now have lost five of their last six games. Webster returns home on January 8 as it hosts Iowa Wesleyan College. The Gorloks then host Greenville College (IL) on January 10 at Grant Gymnasium.
