Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team lost, 57-39, at Fontbonne University in a pivotal St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on February 11. The Gorloks fall to 5-9 in the SLIAC and will have to scramble in the final four league games to secure a conference postseason tournament spot.
In a sloppy first half for both teams, the Gorloks trailed, 22-27, heading into the locker room. Webster had a season high 20 turnovers for the half, but Fontbonne had its own troubles, losing the ball 12 times. Webster shot 5-16 for the half, but 4-8 from the three point line
Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) had nine points to lead Webster, going 3-3 from the three-point line. Cassie Endicott (SR, Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds for the half for Webster.
The Griffins extended their lead in the second half to 45-27 with 11:30 remaining in the contest, and cruised to victory. Webster would wind up shooting 10-41 (24%) from the field and finished with a season-high 31 turnovers on the evening.
Endicott finished the night with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds. With her nine rebounds, Endicott now has 499, moving into sixth place on Webster's all-time career list. Endicott passed up former teammate, Megan Willett (2008-12) who had 493. Brooks had a team-high nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
Webster is in a three-way tie for sixth place now with Fontbonne and Principia College at 5-9. The Gorloks are a game behind Greenville College, who is in fifth at 6-8. The fifth place spot is important in the SLIAC in regards to the postseason tournament this season. Iowa Wesleyan College, in second place, is not yet eligible for post-season play in the SLIAC. Its elimination from consideration for the SLIAC Tournament will give the fifth place finisher the fourth and final spot.
The Gorloks, who had defeated the Griffins earlier this season, 52-47, on January 17 at Grant Gymnasium, fall to 8-13 overall.
Webster has back to back home games on February 14 and February 16. Blackburn College visits Grant on the 14th, Valentine's Day, and it will be the 'Pink Zone' game, with a 50/50 raffle and t-shirt sales to help aid in the research of breast cancer. Donations will also be accepted. The 2014 Webster golf team will be honored at halftime of the women's contest.
Spalding University makes the trip from Louisville, KY, to face the Gorloks on February 16. The Webster 2014 baseball and volleyball teams will be honored at halftime of the women's game and the Webster 2014 men's and women's soccer teams will be honored at halftime of the men's game that evening.
