Gorloks Upset Bid Falls Short, Lose to Tigers 44-43

Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker, falling 44-43, at Iowa Wesleyan College on February 7, at Mt. Pleasant, IA.  The Gorloks led most of the way in a bid for an upset of the Tigers on their home floor, but were overtaken in the final minute of play.
 
Webster led 26-17 at the half, and still led, 36-30, with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.   The Tigers cut the lead to 43-42 with 31 seconds left on the game clock.  Wesleyan hit a basket with three seconds remaining that gave them a 44-43 lead and turned out to be the game winner.
 
Shooting wise, it was a tale of two halfs for Webster.  The Gorloks shot 11-26 (42%) in the first half as they built the lead, but could only fire 5-22 (23%) in the second.  The Tigers had a reverse trend, shooting 5-21 (24%) in the first, and 9-21 (43%) as they came back in the second.

Webster had only four turnovers in the game, easily beating their previous season low of 10, set against Principia in its previous contest.  The Gorloks forced 16 Tiger turnovers in the game.  Wesleyan was able to connect on nine of 20 three-point attempts to Webster just making two of 13 from beyond the arc.

Danielle Meadows (SO, Centralia, IL/Centralia HS) led Webster with 15 points, on 5-10 shooting, and had four rebounds and two steals on the afternoon.  Cassie Endicott had 12 points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots.  Endicott had two free throws, giving her sole possession of eighth place on Webster's career list, with 195.  She had been tied with Michelle Irving (2001-04) at 193.

Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) had nine points, three rebounds, and a team-high three assists for the game.  Freshman Tayl;or Lucas (Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) had a team-high five rebounds and added six points in the contest.

It would have been quite an upset for the Gorloks, with the Tigers entering the game at 10-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and tied for second place.  They are now 11-2 and 14-6 overall. The Gorloks are 5-8 in the SLIAC and 8-12 overall on the season. Webster was looking for its first win vs. Iowa Wesleyan since the school  joined the SLIAC last year.

Webster takes the short drive down Big Bend Blvd on February 11 to renew "The Battle of Big Bend" with Fontbonne University.  The day will feature several Gorlok vs. Griffin activities.  Included will be a 'knockout' contest at halftime of the women's contest and a relay race at halftime of the men's game...featuring the Gorlok and Griffin.
