WINNECONNE, Wis. - Webster University men's cross country had their second best finish in school history at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh here Saturday as the Gorloks placed 23rd out of 36 teams at Lake Breeze Golf Course Saturday morning.

At Saturday's final meet of the 2019 season, Webster finished 66 points behind its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Greenville University (630 points) and 12 points ahead of 24th place Illinois Tech. North Central (Ill.) College took home the regional title as they put four runners inside the Top 11 and scored a total of 47 points, while Wisconsin-La Crosse was second with 89 points and WashU placed third with 98 points.

Webster has now finished in the Top 30 of the regional championships for the fourth consecutive season and the 23rd place showing at this year's meet was second best in school history as the best finish was 22nd in 2014.

Leading the way for the Gorloks was junior
Nathan Freyling (Fenton, Mo./Fox) as he placed 79th overall after running the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:36.1. The 79th place finish was the second highest for a Gorlok runner in an NCAA Regional meet as the highest finish was a 24th place showing by Ethan Jeffries at the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regionals held in Rock Island, Ill. Last season, Freyling placed 96th at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in a then personal best 8K time of 26:45.10.

Freyling's time of 26:36.1 was the third fastest 8K time this season by a Gorlok runner and the seventh fastest time in school history in an NCAA Regional meet. The time was also the 18th fastest 8K time in school history.

University of Chicago's Ryan Cutter was the individual champion as he ran the 8K course in a time of 24:32.6, while Wisconsin-Whitewater's David Fassbender was second with an 8K time of 24:36.8 and Wisconsin-La Crosse's Tyler Nault was third with an 8K time of 24:40.9.

In addition to Freyling, freshman
Cameron Sakuma (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) was the second Gorlok finisher as he placed 86th while running a personal best 8K time time of 26:47.0. Sakuma's finish was the third best ever in an NCAA Regional Championship and marked the first time in school history that Webster had two runners place inside the Top 100.

Sam Baker (Memphis, Tenn./Saint Benedict at Auburndale) as he ran a personal best 8K time of 28:36.4 to place 168th, while fellow freshman
Kaelin Triggs (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) was the fourth finisher for the Gorloks as he recorded a personal best 8K time of 28:45.4 to finish in 176th place and senior
Abram Donovan (Saint Paul, Minn./Highland Park) was the fifth Gorlok finisher running an 8K time of 29:07.0 to finish 187th in his final collegiate meet.
The last two scoring runners were sophomores
Eli Guzman (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) and
Javier Cervantes (Garden City, Kan./Garden City) as Guzman completed the 8K course in a time of 29:14.2 to place 191st overall and Cervantes was 196th overall with an 8K time of 29:29.4.
