WEBSTER GROVES – Without sports for the 2020 first semester, Webster University Athletics looks back at some events that took place during the week for This Week in Gorlok Athletics History - Nov. 16-22.
 
Nov. 16, 2013 – Webster senior men's cross country runner Ethan Jeffries concluded his cross country career with a 24th place finish at the Midwest Regional Championships held in Rock Island, Ill. The 24th place is the highest for a Gorlok runner in a regional meet in the program's history and also helped Jeffries earn All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA. At the meet, Jeffries ran a school record 8K time of 25:04 to finish 24th out of 275 runners. As a team, Webster only had four runners compete and did not have a team score. With his performance, Jeffries just missed qualifying as an individual into the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championships as he recorded the 10th fastest time among runners from the six non-qualifying teams to nationals, but the NCAA selected the Top 7 individuals from the region to nationals. Nov. 17, 2007 – Webster men's basketball used a half-court shot from Webster Athletics Hall of Famer Ryan Turk as time expired to pick up a 51-49 win over Hanover College in the final game of the Help the Homeless Classic at Grant Gymnasium. Turk's half-court shot came right after Hanover's Clint Parker scored with 2.4 seconds left gave Hanover a 49-48 lead. After trailing by as much as 10 points midway through the second half, the Gorloks took a 46-45 lead with 1:28 left and then after Hanover hit two free throws with 34 seconds left to take a 47-46 lead, Luke Niebrugge scored a lay-up with 11 seconds left to set up the final dramatics of the game. Niebrugge led the way for the Gorloks with 12 points, while Turk added 10 points and seven rebounds and three other Gorloks added six points in the win. In the win, Webster shot 44 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line, while Hanover shot 36 percent from the floor and 17 percent from the 3-point line. Hanover led 22-16 at the half, but Webster outscored Hanover, 35-27 after halftime. Recap | Box Score
 
Nov. 18, 2016 – The Webster women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with an 85-70 in the Cavallo Tip-Off Classic at Grant Gymnasium. In the win, Webster jumped out to a 26-10 lead after the opening period and led 46-21 at the half. The Gorloks, who scored 20 or more points in three of the four periods, defense had a big help in the win as they forced Rust into 13 first period turnovers and 25 total turnovers in the first half. For the game, the Gorloks collected 15 steals and forced 33 turnovers and dished out 26 assists, which was at the time tied for the eighth most in a game in school history. Jade Sawyer led the way offensively for Webster with 14 points, while Jaysea Morgan added 13 points. Kelsey Miller, Natalie Buscher and Ebony Bailey each had 10 points in the win. Recap | Box Score
 
Nov. 19, 2010 – Webster senior women's soccer player Christy Capkovic made some history on Nov. 19, 2010, as she was a Third-Team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American selection. With her selection, she became just the second the second-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American in school history and the first since baseball player Eric Stack was a Second-Team selection in 1991. During the 2010 season, Capkovic scored 18 goals and added nine assists and was named a First-Team All-SLIAC selection. Along with being just the second Academic All-American in school history, Capkovic became the fifth women's players in SLIAC history to earn Academic All-American honors. Recap
 
Nov. 20, 2010 – The Webster men's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 2-0 record following a 74-60 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in the finale of the Cavallo Classic played at Grant Gymnasium. The 2-0 start to the season was the first for the Gorloks since the 2007-08 season. Willie Trimble, who was named the Cavallo Classic MVP, led the way for 22 points and added four assists and three steals in the win. In addition to Trimble, Jerrod Huskey added 11 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Nick Jones had 11 points and five rebounds for the Gorloks. Against the Prairie Wolves, Webster jumped out to an 18-4 lead and led 27-18 at the half and then outscored NWU, 47-42, to cruise to the 14-point win. Webster forced 27 turnovers in the win and was 24-for-28 from the free throw line, while NWU shot 47 percent from the field, but was just 12-for-21 from the free throw line. Recap | Box Score
 
Nov. 21, 2014 – Hunter Ward posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds and going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line in the second half to help spark a second half comeback en route to earning an 81-68 over Millikin in the opening round of the Cavallo Classic at Grant Gymnasium. After trailing by as much as 11 points in the first half, the Gorloks took a 62-60 lead on a three from Ward with 5:25 left in the game. Ward's would hit three more treys over the next 3:30 to help push Webster out to a 78-65 lead with 1:50 remaining in the game. In addition to Ward's double-double, Ahmad Smith added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Aaron Griffin also had 13 points, but also had six rebounds and two blocked shots. Adam Etter added eight points, five assists and four steals in the win. The Gorloks jumped out to a 22-11 lead in the first half, but Millikin knocked that lead down to two at 28-26 at the half. The Gorloks shot 55 percent from the field and held a 40-32 edge on the boards, while Millikin shot 38 percent from the field in the loss. Recap | Box Score
 
Nov. 22, 2013 – Webster men's soccer defender Jeff Wallner made history of Nov. 22, 2013 as he became just the third Gorlok student-athlete to be named a Division III Capital One/CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American. Wallner earned his Academic All-American honor after recording a cumulative grade point average of 3.97 in both Mathematics and Education. During the 2014 season, Wallner was a starter for the Gorloks, who finished with a 14-2-3 record and also finished in a tie for first place in the SLIAC regular season with an 8-1 league record. He was tied for fifth on the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and three assists and he was part of a Webster defensive unit that recorded nine shutouts and had the lowest goals against average in the league.
