WEBSTER GROVES – Without sports for the 2020 first semester, Webster University Athletics looks back at some events that took place during the week for This Week in Gorlok Athletics History – Dec. 14-20.
Dec. 14, 2019 – Webster men's basketball scored 90 points in its second consecutive game as the Gorloks picked up a 93-90 win in overtime against MacMurray College in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Game of the Week at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks, who trailed 77-72 with 4:13 left in regulation, used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take an 82-79 lead with 20 seconds left in regulation and then MacMurray tied the game with six seconds left to force overtime. In overtime, Webster outscored the Highlanders, 11-8, to seal the win and improve to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the SLIAC. Wynne Brown, Jr., led the way for the Gorloks with a career-high 27 points, including scoring 19 of those points in the first half to help Webster take a 42-32 halftime lead. In addition to Brown, Jr.'s 27 points, Enrique Tankins added a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Rodson Etienne was the third double-digit as he scored 19 points and added seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Etienne scored 17 of his 19 points after halftime, including tallying 14 points in the second half. For the game, Webster shot 48 percent from the field, 37 percent from the 3-point line and 89 percent from the free throw line, while MacMurray shot 51 percent from the field, 47 percent from long distance and 82 percent at the free throw line. The Gorloks also held a 42-33 edge on the boards, including collecting 18 offensive rebounds that led to a 19-15 edge in second chance points. Webster also blocked 10 shots and those 10 blocks were tied for the fourth most in a game in school history.

Dec. 15, 2016 – The Webster Athletics Department unveiled its Hall of Fame Class of 2017 inductees on this date in 2016. Webster's 10th Hall of Fame Class included five former Gorlok student-athletes. The Hall of Fame Class of 2017 inductees were Christy Capkovic (women's soccer, 2007-10), Megan Niederschulte Garrett (women's soccer, 2007-10), Darin Hoggatt (men's basketball, 2004-08), Katy Meyer (women's basketball, 2007-11) and Will Savage (baseball, 2007-10). The five Hall of Famers were selected by a committee made up of faculty, coaches and staff and the Class of 2017 pushed the total of Hall of Fame membership to 34.

Dec. 16, 2018 – Webster women's basketball rebounded from a 27 point loss at Spalding less than 24 hour earlier by earning a 66-53 non-conference win over Lawrence University at Grant Gymnasium. In the game, Webster jumped in front 9-0 in the opening two-plus minutes and never trailed in the contest as they scored 14 or more points in all four periods. Addison Beussink led the way offensively for the Gorloks with 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. In addition to Beussink, Kaylee Heggemann added 13 points and Hannah Cottrell tallied 12 points, six rebounds and five steals in the win. Webster held a 34-13 edge in bench points. The Gorloks led 32-24 at the half and led 52-42 after three periods. Webster shot 48 percent from the field and 18 percent from the 3-point line, while Lawrence shot just 34 percent from the field and were 0-for-7 from the 3-point line. The Gorloks also held a 39-27 edge on the glass and both teams struggled at the free throw line as Webster went 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) and Lawrence was 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) for the game.

Dec. 17, 2008 – Former Webster two-sport standout Patrick McSheehy, who lettered with the Gorloks in men's soccer from 1997-01 and baseball from 1998-02, was selected on this date to be inducted into the SLIAC Hall of Fame Class of 2009. During his four year career in soccer at Webster, McSheehy was a four-time All-SLIAC selection and was named the SLIAC Player of the Year in 2000 and he also helped lead the Gorloks to the first two NCAA Tournament berths in the program's history in both 1999 and 2000. In baseball, McSheehy was a three-time All-SLIAC selection and at the time of his Hall of Fame induction he was the school's all-time leader in games played (148), at-bats (525), hits (212), runs (155), home runs (18), doubles (65) and triples (7). In addition, McSheehy was a two-time Webster Athletics Student-Athlete of the Year.

Dec. 18, 2010 – The Webster men's basketball team completed play in the Lon Varnell Classic hosted by the University of Sewanee by posting a 76-71 win over Berry (Ga.) College. Webster's victory was spearheaded by the offensive play of Willie Trimble as he scored a team high 21 points and added six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Along with Trimble's 21 point game, Nick Jones added 20 points and added five rebounds, while Alec Kuhl chipped in with nine points and seven boards. In the win, Webster led 36-32 at the half and outscored Berry, 40-39 in the second half. The Gorloks shot 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line, while Berry shot 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from the 3-point line. The Gorloks also held a 38-34 edge on the glass in the win.

Dec. 19, 2015 – Webster's men's basketball earned its second straight win in the Cruzin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with a 71-63 win over Trinity Baptist College. In the win over Trinity Baptist, the Gorloks raced to a 40-21 advantage at the half and never looked back en route to earning the win and improving to 4-4 on the year. Hunter Ward paced the Gorloks with a game-high 26 points as he went 10-for-12 from the field and also added eight rebounds. In addition to Ward, C.J. Moore added 13 points, while Xavier Dortch came off the bench to score 11 points. Webster finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field and 31 percent from the 3-point line, while Trinity Baptist shot 51 percent from the field and 33 percent from long distance. The Gorloks also dished out 18 assists on 27 made baskets and outrebounded the Eagles, 34-28.

Dec. 20, 2009 – Webster's men's basketball team closed out the first half of its 2009-10 season by posting a 65-47 win over Coe College in its second game of the Webster Classic at Grant Gymnasium. In the win over Coe, Drew Moore, who was named to the Webster Classic All-Tournament Team, led the way for the Gorloks with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Cody Bradfisch and John Ortwerth each had 10 points and Jerry Strickland added nine points in the victory. Against Coe, Webster led 35-20 at the half and outscored the Kohawks, 30-27 in the second half to post the 18 point win. The Gorloks shot 45 percent from the field and 35 percent from the 3-point line, while Coe shot 34 percent from the field and 24 percent from long distance. Webster held a 44-36 edge on the boards and the Gorloks forced 15 turnovers and dished out 19 assists on 28 made baskets.
