BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Webster University senior guard
Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) was named this week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office.
Morgan is the first Gorlok this season to earn a Women's Basketball Player of the Week accolade and first Webster women's hoops player honored by the league since sophomore forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) was honored on Dec. 3, 2018.
The 5-foot-7 guard earns this week's SLIAC Player of the Week honor after averaging 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 5.5 steals per game to help the first place Gorloks to two consecutive wins at home against Greenville (94-77) and at MacMurray (88-61) to improve its record to 13-6 overall and 11-1 in the SLIAC.
Morgan began the week by scoring a career high 25 points and adding five rebounds, four assists and a career-high tying seven steals in the home win over Greenville and then tallied 14 points, two rebounds and four assists in the win over MacMurray. Against Greenvile, Morgan also shot 73 percent (8-for-11) from the field and was 8-for-10 (80 percent) at the free throw line and then shot 56 percent from the floor and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line against the Highlanders.
With those 39 points this week, Morgan pushed her career scoring total to 935 points and passed Kim Sheets for eighth on the school's career scoring chart and is now 65 points shy of becoming the seventh women's basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points. In addition, she is now just seven steals shy of the school's career mark for steals, which is held by Laura Stuhlman, who recorded 258 steals from 1998-02.
On the season, Morgan is second on the team in scoring as she is averaging 12.5 points per game and is also averaging 3.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game and is shooting 52 percent from the field, 32 percent from the 3-point line and 87 percent at the free throw line. Morgan has scored in double figures in five consecutive games and 13 times overall on the season.
Morgan and rest of the Gorloks will look to extend its win streak to 10 consecutive games this coming Wednesday, Feb. 5 as they travel less than 2 miles up Big Bend Blvd. for a 5:30 p.m. SLIAC contest against Fontbonne (11-8 overall, 10-2 SLIAC).Â
