WEBSTER GROVES – With the cancellation of the spring sports season, Webster Athletics will be recognizing their spring senior student-athletes twice a week on www.websterathletics.com for the remainder of the 2020 spring semester. The third edition of the Webster Senior Spotlight recognizes Matt Mulhearn (baseball) and Meredith Sowers (women's track and field).
 
Matt Mulhearn • Sr. / Chicago Heights, Ill. (Marian Catholic HS) / Baseball

Mulhearn has been a part of the Gorlok baseball team the past four seasons… since coming to Webster, Mulhearn has become one of the top pitchers in the program's history as he is tied for third in career wins (22), fourth in games started (34), fourth in career innings pitched (246.0), fourth in career strikeouts (227), fifth in career appearances (54) and sixth in career ERA (2.60)… in his career, he is 22-7 with a 2.60 ERA… as a junior in 2019, he won a single season school record 12 games as he posted a 12-2 record and a 2.13 ERA… the 12 wins last season were also second most in Division III baseball… he also won 10 games in 2018, which is tied for second most in a single season as he went 10-2 with a 2.99 ERA… the right-hander has had impeccable control throughout his collegiate career as in 246 career innings, he walked just 45 batters, including walking just 11 and striking out 102 in 2019… has a career 5.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio… this season, was 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA as he had made six appearances and four starts and tossed a complete game 12 inning affair against Concordia-Chicago… tossed 28 innings on the season and allowed nine runs, six of which were earned, while walking four and striking out 23… recorded five career games of 10 or more strikeouts, including two games of 12 strikeouts each… named an ABCA/Rawlings Third-Team All-American and a D3Baseball.com Honorable Mention All-American in 2019 and is a two-time ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region selection… earned First-Team SLIAC honors in 2019 and was a second team selection in 2018…holds school single season records for wins (12 in 2019), innings pitched (105.2 in 2019), runners picked (7 in 2019), fewest walks allowed in nine innings (0.94 in 2019) and games started (15 in 2019)…  in the classroom, was a two-time member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team, earned a CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District 5 honor in 2019 and received the 2019 Webster University President's Award… served as the President of Webster's SAAC and was also the President of the SLIAC SAAC in 2018-19… a native of Chicago Heights, Ill., Mulhearn graduated from Marian Catholic High School and earned his Bachelor's degree from Webster in Finance and is currently pursuing an MBA at Webster.

Meredith Sowers • Sr. / Multiple Events / Rolla, Mo. (Rolla HS) / Women's Track & Field

Sowers has been a four-year participant in track and field and cross country at Webster… is one of the all-time most decorated student-athletes in school history… earned First-Team All-SLIAC honors in cross country the past three years and is a 20-time All-SLIAC honoree in both indoor and outdoor track and field, including being a 12-time SLIAC champion in multiple events… named the 2019 SLIAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after taking home a league-record six gold medals at the SLIAC Championships… earned the 2017 SLIAC Outdoor Track Newcomer of the Year… at this season's inaugural SLIAC Indoor Track Championships, she was the SLIAC champion in the 800 meters, 4-x-400 meter relay and the pole vault and earned All-SLIAC honors in those same three events, along with the 60 meter hurdles… hold indoor school records in the 600 meters, 800 meters, 1,000 meters, pole vault, 4-x-400 meter relay and the sprint medley relay and holds school outdoor records in pole vault and the 4-x-400 meter relay… currently sits in the Top 5 all-time at Webster in the indoor 60-meter hurdles, indoor mile, indoor distance medley relay, indoor 400-meters, outdoor 100-meter hurdles, outdoor 400-meter hurdles, outdoor 800-meters and outdoor 4-x-100 and 4-x-400 meter relays… during the 2019 outdoor season, ranked 35th nationally in Division III in the 400-meter hurdles… is a three-time SLIAC Track Athlete of the Week… earned a spot on the SLIAC Winter All-Academic Team this year and is a three-time member of the SLIAC Fall All-Academic Team and a two-time member of the Spring SLIAC All-Academic Team… a native of Rolla, Mo., Sowers attended Rolla High School and is majoring in Criminology at Webster.
