WEBSTER GROVES – Webster's men's golf program will be well represented at this year's Missouri State Amateur Golf Championship as four current Gorloks have earned spots in the tournament which is scheduled to be held from June 23-28 at the Ozarks National Golf Course in Hollister, Mo.
The four Gorloks that have qualified for the 113th annual tournament are junior
Will Hocker (Grapevine, Texas/University of Oklahoma), senior
Cole Pickett (Greenville, Ill./Keiser University), freshman
Cody Surma (Lexington, Ill./University High) and junior
Mitchell Vetter (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine).

Hocker, who was named a PING/GCAA NCAA Division III All-American this season, qualified for a spot in the Missouri State Amateur after finishing in a tie for 14th place at a local qualifying tournament at the Falls Golf Club in O'Fallon, Mo., on May 26, while Vetter and Surma qualified for the State Amateur after tying for sixth and 10th at that qualifier at the Jefferson City County Club.
At the qualifier at the Falls Golf Club, Hocker carded a two-over par score of 73 to finish in a tie for 14th place. The qualifying event at the Falls Golf Club featured 94 golfers looking for one of 48 spots in the Missouri State Amateur Championships.
The qualifier at the Jefferson City County Club featured 61 golfers looking for 25 spots in the Missouri State Amateur Championships and Vetter and Surma earned spots after shooting scores of 1-over par 73 and 3-over par 75 to finish tied for sixth and 10th respectively. Meanwhile, Pickett tied for 24th place after shooting a 6-over 78, but missed the cut for the Top 25 due to a tiebreaker, but earned a spot into this year's amateur field as an alternate.
During the 2019-20 season at Webster, Hocker recorded a 72.0 scoring average in 18 rounds and seven events on the shortened season en route to earning a First-Team PING Division III All-American honor. The All-American honor is the first in school history for a men's golfer and he is also the first-ever All-American in men's golf in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history.
In 2019-20, Hocker led the team with seven rounds of par or better and finished in the Top 10 in six of Webster's seven events, including four Top 5 placements and winning medalist honors at the season opening Culver's Edgewood College Fall Classic. Finished the season with a 602-31 combined record and shot a school record round of 63 (8-under par) in the final round of the Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament and that round of 63 was the lowest round this season among all Division III golfers, while his 8-under par was tied for the lowest round relative to par in Division III. Along with winning medalist honors at the Culver's Edgewood Fall Classic, Hocker was runner-up at the Tempest Intercollegiate and tied for second at the season ending BSN Sports-Dataw Island Invitational. Hocker has five of the lowest scoring rounds this season for the Gorloks.
Pickett finished the 2019-20 shortened season with a 76.22 scoring average in 18 rounds and seven events. Pickett, who is a two-time All-SLIAC selection, recorded two Top 10 finishes, including winning medalist honors at the Country Club Classic after shooting a 2-under par 140 for 36 holes at the event hosted by Millikin University. Pickett had two rounds of par or better on the year and has a career scoring average of 77.56, which is seventh on the school's all-time charts.
Surma closed out his first season of collegiate golf in 2019-20 by recording a scoring average of 79.40 in 15 rounds and six events. On the year, had a season best finish of a tie for 18th place at the Country Club Classic hosted by Millikin University.
Vetter closed out the 2019-20 season with a season scoring average of 76.33, which was third-best on the team. He played in 18 rounds and seven events on the year and had one Top 5 finish as he placed third at the Culvers Edgewood College Fall Classic. As a junior in 2018-19, Vetter was named a First-Team All-SLIAC selection and has a career scoring average of 76.84, which is currently fifth on the school's all-time chart.
The Missouri State Amateur Championship is conducting its 113th championship this year and this year, the Missouri State Amateur Championship will be held at the Ozarks National Golf Club. The Ozarks National Golf Club was named one of the top courses in the state of Missouri in 2019 by Golf Advisor. The course, which was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, was opened in 2018 is a par- 71 course that covers 7,036 yards.
The amateur championship is open to amateur golfers who are current members of the MGA (Missouri Golf Association), play at clubs who are members of the MGA with a certified handicap index on the USGA men's handicap system. All players, unless they are exempt, must qualify for the Missouri Amateur Championship at one of the local qualifiers in their area and this year, there were five local qualifiers. This year, there will be 172 competitors at the Missouri State Amateur Championship.
In addition to the qualifier at the Falls Golf Club in O'Fallon, Mo., and the qualifier at the Jefferson City Country Club, the other qualifying events for this year's Missouri State Amateur were held at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo., on June 3, the Millwood Golf and Racquet Club in Ozark, Mo., on June 8, the Fred Arbanas Golf Club in Longview Lake, Mo., on June 8 and the Oak Meadow Country Club in Rolla, Mo., on June 16.
Players that advance to the Missouri State Amateur Championship will begin play on Monday, June 22 with a practice round, before playing two 18 hole qualifying rounds on June 23-24. Following the second day of qualifying on June 24, the field of golfers will be cut to the lowest 64 scores and those 64 golfers will play 18 holes on match play on June 25, before the final 32 golfers will play in the Round of 32 match play in the morning on June 26 and in the afternoon on June 26, the final 16 will play another round of 18 holes of match play. On Saturday, June 27, the quarterfinals and semifinals will be held with the final two golfers advancing to play 36 holes of match play on Sunday, June 28 to determine the 2020 state amateur champion.
